I know this is the med forum but you could try using one of those Biaural beat programs in unison w/ a med.
I append random MP3s with Adobe Audition and make 30-45min "decents" into low-Theta/Delta brainwave freqs. It's very easy to do that using the Binaural Panner.
I think most people use Brainwave Generator (www.bwgen.com) and I've used that w/ success as well. Key is that you _need_ to use headphones but most times sound files dipping into the delta range (lowest freqs) will help knock me out.
Sorry since this is kinda off-topic.....there was a thread on this subject moved to Alternative not too long ago.
Currently Remeron is gettin me my ZZZs w/ minimal morning hangover. Good luck,
-Jay

Actually, if you want to try the Binaural beat thing I made a sample 30min MP3. It'll take you from ~10hz (Alpha/awake) down to 1hz (Delta/sleep) w/ a few plateaus along the way to allow your brain to entrain.

I used Audition's Binaural Panner for the encoding and "Mod" music by Necros instead of white/pink noise. I usually use just normal commercial music (Soundtracks by James Horner are favs) but obviously sharing commercial stuff would be a problem. Here's the wikipedia entry for Necros: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Sega - I appended 6 or so of his early 90s tunes that are freely available online.
Hope it helps if you give it a go. Remember to use headphones as it's the panning (you'll hear swooshing at first) that gets your brain to "sync".
Cheers,
-Jay

Here's an Alternate sound file of my favorite BrainWave Generator Preset:

This one might actually be more effective. I'm not sure the "computer music" I used in the other MP3 was actually distracting. Just wanted to use something that was legal but perhaps it wasn't the best choice. Either way they both are designed to get you into that delta sleep brainwave range. This is a Brainwave Gen-->WAV-->MP3 of my favorite sleep preset from their site. See this link for comments(and some spam) regarding this preset: http://www.bwgen.com/presets/desc854.htm
Anyway, I'm done w/ the off-topic stuff but hope either MP3 might help a bit.
Cheers,
-Jay

Wow, the first one was great. Very exhilating. You can feel things spin around you. I started to giggle for no good reason.
Strange, I had a headache before starting, and it seemed like the back of my head was hollowing out.
Thanks!

Those tracks are weird - like an alien spaceship. I'll try downloading some onto my MP3 player tonight.
What do you think about these? I'm considering buying the 'Proteus Light and Sound Brain Machine':

Glad it helped!
I kinda regret posting the first one as the music really wasn't suitable for sleep, but oh well. Thanks for humoring me by trying the second and hope it's beneficial down the road...

No, it definately seemed to do something. It almost seemed that at different speeds different emotions came out.

I had this one, name forgotten, which was supposed to help you meditate like a zen monk and allegedly came out of NASA technology or somesuch.
It was nice to listen to, like the sound of rain on a tin roof with water running in a little stream over rocks, and the sound of resonant gongs in the background.
This is the end of the thread.
