Vitamin C calms me down?

Posted by Amigan on May 24, 2008, at 6:44:36

Hi.
I have notice that Vitamin C helps me to calm down when i'm agitated. (Much more than the B-complex. In fact, i don't think that the B-complex helps me at all)
Does this make sense or is it just a placebo response?

Definitely makes sense. Vitamin C is known to suppress the stress hormone Cortisol.

"The Adrenal Glands (especially the Adrenal Medulla) contain the highest concentration (approximately 30 mg) of Vitamin C of any part of the body (where it is utilized in the manufacture of Adrenal Hormones especially Adrenaline):
-Vitamin C (2,500 mg per day) lowers the production of Cortisol and Corticosterone by the Adrenal Glands during periods of Stress."

I can't say I've noticed it myself, but that's how it is supposed to be.

It has a doubly good effect on me (I hope) by being not only calming but also good for allergies.

I should take more of it.

Yes, I get a very good effect from vitamin C.

It has a number of properties which may make it usefull for stress.

It does supress cortisol as mentioned, but it also has a glutamate stabilizing property. Vitamin C also has a dopamine stabilizing property, probably why it can act as a mood stabilizer in bipolar.

There are studies documenting the antistress effect of vitamin C in animals.

I find that if I can't sleep, 500mg of vitamin C can really help.

Take Care,

Question about this. From any of you noticing this positive effect from Vit. C, which form did you take? Was it straight Ascorbic Acid or was is a calcium ascorbate or magnesium ascorbate form? Or did the bottle just say Ester-C?

My favourite form of Vit C was a collection of acorbates that I spooned out and mixed with water.
