Bipolar and NAC

Posted by Lao Tzu on June 5, 2008, at 22:12:08

Tonight I feel less negative about the world than usual. Don't know exactly if it has anything to do with N-acetyl-cysteine, but I've noticed the last few days I am more realistic about things, not feeling on top of the world, but not feeling so negative either. I am bipolar, so it could be a passing phase. Who knows for sure? Also, I've started writing my poetry again, and I only do that when I'm feeling pretty good. I am going to continue to stay on the NAC for now because I haven't had any bad side effects at this point. Will update my progress as the days and weeks pass.

Hi there, I encourage you to do further research about N-Acetyl Cysteine, as apparently it has a very positive impact on many body organs, and especially is good for liver, kidney & lung health.

I've taken NAC for two years now, but have never noticed any impact upon mood, but obviously credible scientific research is showing that it is very helpful for many people.

When I initially researched the amino acid Cysteine, I learned that the body can absorb only a certain (smallish) amount of N-Aceytl Cysteine at any one time.

Maybe there has been new research in the meantime, but not that I'm aware of; anyway, I decided to take the TIME-RELEASE form of NAC, to ensure that I was getting a steady stream of this remarkable substance, and since the body evidentally can only use a small amount at any one time, and simply excretes the overage, I decided that the most economical form of NAC would be the time released tablets.

I haven't seen any research about the use of Acetyl L-Carnitine for bipolar, but everyone I know who takes a gram or two first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, all of them claim that they are quickly in a calm alert positive frame of mind. Evidentally, the Acetyl L-Carnitine increases the brain levels of acetyl choline, and that MIGHT be the reason for the positive frame of mind.

Since you take other supplements, and supplements generally take weeks but usually months to slowly show real benefits, you could be experiencing benefits from something you started long ago. It could appear like NAC because that is the most recent addition. Maybe? If it is the NAC, that is cool. No matter. If something feels good, keep it. If something feels bad, stop it. That's how I see it anyway.

Thank you for the information. I am new with using NAC and ALCAR. I haven't been big on taking amino acids lately because frankly, they don't help me. I think NAC and ALCAR, however, have helped somewhat, but it's probably too soon to make any conclusions. The greatest results I've gotten with supplements has been with individual B vitamins, including B1, B3, B5, B6, and B12. And also zinc and magnesium.

You're probably right. It may take months before I am aware of any benefits of NAC. I'm bipolar, so my energy levels go up and down a lot. If my energy is up, I'm more likely to say that a particular supplement is doing wonders for me. On the other hand, if my energy is low, I am not quite as enthusiastic about new things I try. I can't be quite sure about ALCAR or NAC, but I feel like they both are doing something positive. I've found that I need to take combinations of synergistic substances that don't cancel each other out, but rather compliment each other. That has been my pursuit for over a year.

NAC and ALCAR

When I take NAC and ALCAR in the morning, along with vitamins B1, B5, and C, I feel pretty good up until the afternoon when my energy levels decrease. Additional ALCAR in the afternoon doesn't seem to help any more with increasing energy, so I've resorted to taking evening primrose oil and extra C, and this seems to get my energy levels back up to a more comfortable state. I'm taking only about 250mg of ALCAR in the morning. Once source says the average person does not need anymore than 250mg per day, but Alzheimer's patients have taken thousands of mg per day. Don't really know if ALCAR helps with depression. Haven't seen any proof that it does.
