Essential Fatty Acids

Posted by Lao Tzu on June 8, 2008, at 14:49:50

Forget what I said about not taking Omega-6s and Omega-3s at the same time. This afternoon, I took my evening primrose oil (omega-6) and my fish oil (omega-3) at the same time, and wow, I feel pretty darn good. I take 1,000mg of each together. I think that you are supposed to get a balance of omega-6s and omega-3s in your diet. The EPO gives me energy and the fish oil helps with mood, so it seems to be a good balance. I say this because if I take too much fish oil all by itself, I feel lethargic. Hope this helps some of you.:)

I also had a great anti-depressant effect when I started taking EPO, although I found Borage Oil worked better for me. It has a higher % of GLA than EPO does.

It worked great for about 3 or 4 months then started fading, I guess I reached the right balance. I am taking a break and going to try a cycle of Borage again b/c it worked so well accross the board.

Thanks so much for the information. I think I will try borage oil instead. When you say it faded after 3 or 4 months, what exactly do you mean? That it didn't help your depression as much after 3-4 months? I guess taking a break might be good, then going back on it so it regains its effectiveness. Thanks again.

Another question, does borage oil give you extra energy? Increasing energy levels are so important for depression, especially during the depressive stages of bipolar disorder.

Yes, I found many benefits to taking Borage ( GLA) supplements, one of which was a huge increase in energy and mental clarity. ( I have very lethargic, dull type depression).

I also found that after a month or so of taking it, my extremely horrible panic attacks slowly got better and I have not had one since.

I cant say enough good things about it.

The thing that is probably making you feel better is Prostaglandin E-1, which is made from Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA)- Borage, Everning Primrose and Black Currant are they only natural things that I know of that contain GLA. A healthy person will usually turn Omega 6's into GLA, but some people will have problems producing enough due to faulty enzymes ( so goes the theory- which I believe)

I posted a few times over the last 8 months or so about my experiences with it, if you search "GLA" or "Borage Oil" you might be interested in checking them out if you are intersted in the topic..
