DLPA with meds?

Posted by PsychJ on June 8, 2008, at 15:55:23

Hi. I'm currently taking Wellbutrin XL 450mg. I had been taking 300mg and it was working very well for 6-7 weeks, then it's effects faded. Bumping the dosage up to 450mg hasn't seemed to have any impact. I've been reading about the effects of DLPA (or other amino acids like tyrosine) on dopamine, and am considering trying it.
I don't know enough about the pharmacology of it all, like if the WB and DLPA do the same thing with dopamine or not. But would taking DLPA on top of 450mg of Wellbutrin XL be too much?
Thanks a bunch,
J

DLPA does not do the same thing as Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin makes dopamine and norepinephrine more available to postsynaptic membranes of nerve cells. It is a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor, meaning it prevents the dopamine from being reabsorbed back into the presynaptic membrane and then broken down. DLPA is a precursor of dopamine and its use will help in the production of more dopamine. In my experience, I don't find it to be very useful for depression. A better supplement is SAM-E. That has a much better "feel" than DLPA, and it does increase dopamine production. Personally, I prefer SAM-E over DLPA for depression. However, I don't know if you should take either one with Wellbutrin. I would definitely suggest you ask your doctor or a pharmacist to see if there are any contraindications or drug interactions with Wellbutrin. If not, I would highly recommend SAM-E over DLPA. The only negative about SAM-E is that it is much more expensive than DLPA as far as quantity of pills you get in a bottle. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I forgot to mention that there is an increased risk of seizures with Wellbutrin, but the risk might be less with the XL version. Anyhow, I don't know if taking DLPA with the Wellbutrin would make risk of seizures even higher. I'm not sure. Best to talk with doctor about it. Good luck.
