Vitamin C interferes with my sleep

Posted by Lao Tzu on January 26, 2009, at 10:40:07

I've noticed that even 500mg of vitamin C taken at bedtime causes me to have insomnia. I can take vitamin C early on in the day, and my sleep architecture seems fine, but not at bedtime. The only vitamins that help me with sleep are the following:

750mg Niacin sustained-release
400IU natural vitamin E
1/4 of a 3mg melatonin tablet
50-75mg vitamin B6 (P5P form)
25mg zinc gluconate
200mcg selenium yeast

If I don't take All of these together, I have trouble sleeping. All of these vitamins are recommended for bipolars and schizophrenics, and they have worked for my sleep problems ever since I started taking them.

Really?

Very interesting.

Maybe that is where I am going wrong?

I was under the impression it was OK.

Yeah, I was taking 500mg of C at bedtime, and I noticed that if I withdrew this from my bedtime regimen, I could sleep better. Don't get me wrong, Vitamin C is great for anyone who is depressed, but I have to take it early in the day. Vitamin C works well for my mood along with the other vitamins I take. However, I don't need to megadose on it like some people do. I only need about 500mg per day more or less. 250mg is definitely not enough, but 500 seems to work well for me.

Vitamin C causes me to sleep deeper and to wake calm, almost drugged calm. Vitamin C works to lower cortisol and the adrenal response. Since my adrenal response spikes unusually high at night when it shouldn't, I think Vit C puts a damper on it. That's what it feels like anyway. I used to wake up with butterflies in my stomach. A mere 250mg Vit C at bedtime made them go away the first try and every other time tried.

This was what I was working on.

Who knows?

I shall have to experiment.

Well, I did, and ditched the CSalts and just took a CalMagGlycine powder that has some acorbate, the rest being citrate.

And I slept better.

That's interesting! I've never taken VitC at night, always in the morning. After your dream I dont think I'll try!
BTW where do you get that powder from?

Gday Jan

My doctor has a line to some New Zealand outfit, and you have to do it through your doctor, or at least through his recommendation.

I tried to find something similar online but could not.

It's a good product.

It would be nice to find out why my sleep is so bad.

I know this thread is a 4 months old but I wanted to share my experiences.

A few nights ago, I took 3 fish oil capsules and a multivitamin. At around 7pm, I took 500mg vitamin C because I thought that due to it lowering cortisol levels, it might help with sleep. I had still been feeling hyper.

I wasn't optimistic that I would get enough sleep but I did.

Yesterday, I took 1 fish oil capsule and the same multivitamin dose. Because I felt sleepy after dinner, I didn't take the vitamin C. I easily fell asleep but woke up at around 3am and couldn't get back to sleep.

I am not sure what this all proves if anything but it just shows how variable our experiences can be.

My experience with vit. c : When taken at night I sleep deeper and experience the most vivid and realistic dreams that i can remember. Possibly from the result that it easily crosses the bbb or blood brain barrier. Sometimes I forget to take it and wake up taking 1000mg's sleep another hour and feel like I've slept 4-6 hrs..wake up a little groggy but relaxed like i want to go back to sleep. Kinda feeling like I'm comeing over a cold or something..wierd but pleasant at the same time. I know theres something going on here..would like more info...thx

sorry to post to an old post, but I read old posts all the time! Fish oil has been found to act like an antidepressant in research, and would therefore improve sleep. I started to take it a year ago for sleep problems and it did get me sleeping thru the night. I used to wake after 2-3hours of sleep, but it got me up to five straight hours of sleep, and still does. I normally am a 6 hour sleeper and am searching in vain for another hour of sleep! not all fish oils work the same and could be a hunt and find job for a person. I found a concentrated(I think its a walgreens brand: natures finest, concentrated) and the EPA component is the most important value in the fish oil that helps the sleep side. I also found I have to take it in the morning, and one at dinner time. it didn't work as well if I took it before bedtime for some reason. I used to take larger doses of vit C, like @1500mg, and decided to cut down on it to what ever is in a multi vitamin, cause I thought it was doing more harm than good(constant sinus problems, frequent urination)other than sleep changes(losing that hour of sleep) and I don't know if that's from less C, I think I do better without the 1500mg of C. I may try the 250mg of C at bedtime though. I know I've read we need a lot of C to get past the blood-brain barrier, supposedly involved with the neuro-transmitters. but how much is a lot for a person? I am leary of mega-dosing in C anymore because of the contraindications with that. But so far, fish oil is the only supplement that works consistently over time, just looking for other supplements to push it over the 5 hour mark now!

Hello Nocturnal1!

Welcome to Psycho-Babble! Thanks for that information about vitamin C and fish oil. That is very interesting to me because I take fish oil. I have the opposite problem though, I sleep too much.

Hi Deneb,
I want to hear about your concoction of supplements you take then!I would like to have the "sleep to much" issue for once!

I don't really take anything for sleep specifically. I know my nighttime meds, the Celexa and Risperdal, cause drowsiness.

I don't think I take supplements that promote sleep, but here is what I take:

1 multi-vitamin with iron
1000 IU vitamin D
fish oil with 400 EPA and 200 DHA
10 mg ch-OSA (BioSil)

I just saw a Naprapath(yeah, I didn't know what that meant, either) and she suggested I get gluten out of my diet for two weeks and see how I do in general. gluten sensitivity is quite common, though people don't know they have it and its difficult to test for clinically. I think I will do that and see what happens with the sleep.

Fish oil/ omega 3's totally keep me up at night! Can't take it after 6pm.

So funny how different we all are...

I don't take it past 6 or 7pm either. If I don't take it by early evening, I notice I don't sleep thru the night then. I think it must take time to get metabolized and get past the blood-brain barrier. but if I take it later in the evening, its like I didn't take it at all; I awake in the middle of the night.
now I am thinking of taking vit C again since one earlier post mentioned 250mg of C b4 bed helped them. I used to megadose on C and then dropped it, and I don't know if it is related to C, my sleep started cutting back to 5.5 hours right on the money. trying to get more sleep hours in and nothing so far has been consistent.

cutting out gluten(wheat products) from my diet has not really made any difference in sleep or otherwise. can't tell if it makes my nose runny, though I suspect it, as I do have a sensitivity towards wheat. I stay off it, then I have some, so its unpredictable if its causing my never ending runny nose.
