Calcium supplementation and insomnia

Posted by Lao Tzu on February 19, 2009, at 9:51:07

I've noticed that if I've been taking calcium everyday for an extended period of time, it seems to have a more stimulating effect than a sedating one. That being said, I've noticed that if I take my calcium too close to bedtime, I get insomnia. Just to make people aware if you are having insomnia and supplementing with calcium. I think it best to take calcium early in the day, probably in the morning with your other supplements and you might avoid bouts of insomnia. I've found for myself, 300mg maximum per day is what I can tolerate. It has been helpful for depression when taken with other supplements. It is strange, but I also noticed that if I took calcium only once in a while, it DID NOT seem to cause insomnia, only if I supplemented with it EVERYDAY. Now I am dependent on it for depression, so I just take it in the morning to avoid insomnia. At bedtime, I take only 4 supplements to help me fall asleep and that regimen works very well. The four supplements are Niacin sustained-release, Vitamin E (400IU), P5P (activated B6), and a small dose of melatonin. I sleep like a baby. Just want to put this information out there for people who need to take calcium as part of their nutrient program.

According to various sources, this post may mainly apply to those with bipolar disorder supplementing with calcium. Other people may benefit from taking calcium at night for insomnia. I just wanted to relate my own experience, as I have bipolar disorder/schizophrenia. As I said, I can only tolerate 300mg of calcium per day. Other people may be able to tolerate a lot more.
