Essential Fatty Acids and Bipolar

Posted by Lao Tzu on January 14, 2009, at 16:43:54

For myself, I tend to do better when I take my fatty acids (fish oil, flax, borage, primrose) at the exact same times of day at a ratio of 1:1 omega-3s to omega-6s. Otherwise, if I take my oils at different times of day, I get some strange effects. Has anyone else experienced this? I tend to have a more stable mood when I swallow all of my oils together in the morning. Also, the correct dosage for one individual can vary widely with another individual. In my case, I only can tolerate one 1,300mg borage oil capsule with 1,500mg of fish oil. This is a very small dosage, and might seem insignificant to a lot of bipolars who require megadoses of fish oil. If I take megadoses of fish oil, my depression gets worse believe it or not. So I think people have to be careful and determine the correct dosages of EFA's that benefit you. Too little and mood is not corrected. Too much and possibly depression gets worse. This has been my experience.

I took Omega fatty acid/fish oil and I became sleeples/manic. On this note then tried it starting a few drops a day. The dose was extremly low. Even at this very low dose after a few days I became manic. I found out my sister was taking it and she could not sleep if she took it in the afternoon.

That's VERY interesting. I started to get very strange and unusual symptoms combined with panic attacks shortly after I took:

Melatonin
Flax oil - the good brand
Magnesium Citrate

I'm scared of supplments now. I really wish doctors would manage them, specifically PDocs.

Ive read some of your other post and am interested in you profile. Tryptophan, St Johns wart, Lithium, all make me sleepless/irritated. When I told my psych about litium, of course he thought I was "nutty". Sorry to deviate from this thread. Did you post something about how tryptophan made you edgy? Melatonin works well for me, however 10 years ago in my mid twenties it made me sleep forever. My my mind has changed.

This is the end of the thread.
