Midday Irritability

Posted by Johnny Baklava on April 10, 2009, at 16:20:38

I haven't been diagnosed bipolar, yet I have had BP-like reactions to a number of meds and supplements. I've been trying to keep my mood up and my insomnia at bay naturally for nearly a year. Lately, I've been having a peculiar irritability midday. In the morning I take a capsule of something called Adrecor, which has methionine, tyrosine and rhodiola in it, along with lysine, B-vitamin complex, and two Omega-3s. For the last month or so, at about noon, I get kind of agitatedalmost feels a little "horny" only unpleasant and without a craving for sex!and it's such a clockwork thing that I feel it must have something to do with my morning pills. It will last a few hours then go away. At night I'm fine.

Id bet on the tyrosine.
Makes me sleepy, concentrate more, a mild sexual stimulation and energy then irritability.

It causes alot of people to get irritable actually...especially if youre an anxiety patient.

Thanks! It's interesting that I've been taking that supplement for five months now, and it's just this month that this has been happening. Plus, though Adrecor won't list exactly how much tyrosine is in the supplement (there's 450mg of a methionine, tyrosine, histamine, green tea and rhodiola blend) I can't imagine it being more than, say, 200mg at the most. Wild. Today I tried just taking half the capsule to see what's up. So far, it's similar but not as profound. I used to take something called Blast for years which had tons of phenalalynine (sp?) in it and never had that reaction, though it is similar to tyrosine (though I have taken tyrosine supplements before and had the irritability, big time!). One time, after having a 5-htp supplement the night before, a 500mg tab of tyrosine sent me into a mood plunge.

Green tea has caffeine also remember....also will stimulate...and to a higher extent when combined with tyrosine.

phenylalynine (PEA) is a precursor to tyrosine...it will make tyrosine in your body...of course you know that tyrosine converts to L-dopa then to dopamine then to norepinephrine (energy/irritability for some).

One way you can "balance out" the over-stimulation caused by tyrosine:

idealy tyrosine or stimulant based compounds should be taken in the morning or early day as they may effect sleep via this stimulation...ok...one reason they stimulate is because they produce norepinephrine. To counter this you could take a bit of 5htp or tryptophan at night....you need to work out a ratio here between tyrosine and 5htp....this is based on your own physiology and will require trial and error. The tryptophan or 5htp will produce seratonin and essentially "balance out" some of that stimulation.

Other than that...a benzo to rid excess stimulation or, if youre an anxiety patient, dont use tyrosine based supplements

It can....supplements can have different effects on different people.

Its seems to be common though that people with rooted anxiety disorders dont respond well to tyrosine.

It can make a great combo with a seratonin forming supplement like 5htp or tryptophan....these will "balance out" some of the stimulation caused by tyrosine. Naturopaths like this combo. You can provide the patient with something similar to the effect of a rx AD.

luv ya babe
*hugs

Well, I discontinued the supplement that had Tyrosine in it and felt GREAT for a week and a half. I had switched to a ToxinOut supplement that is made to remove heavy metals from the body. It has some methionine and NAC in it, which is why I discontinued the last supplement, that had both methionine and tyrosine. Well, today I'm starting to have similar symptoms: just a terrible restlessness, and of course since I thought I was free of this, had "solved" the problem, I'm feeling a little hopeless. I took a magnesium which helped a little. Any thoughts? I also take a couple of fish pills, a b-vitamin, and a whey/green shake in the morning. Thanks.
