Hello all,
Do you recommend any books for figuring out supplementation? I'd like help with anxiety, OCD, depression (atypical). Would like to read some books to figure out about nutrition and supplements that would help.
Thanks,
Amelia

i never found any books, but mindandmuscle.net forum has lots of good threads with people posting studies, although its not as efficient as reading a book, especially if you don't care about getting HYOOOOOGE

I think I am terminally uncool. What in the world is HYOOOGE? I will go scour the boards. Thanks, d/r. How did you get to be so smart?

Hi Amelia.
A PDF file of an oldie but goodie book on supplements for depression can be downloaded here, free of charge from the author:

The recommendations jibe with more current books I have, so I wouldn't consider it outdated despite its age. The main exception is the absence 5-HTP as an alternative to tryptophan, since it wasn't available when the book was written. (You can find out more about 5-HTP on her site and elsewhere.) I think this would be a good one to start with, especially since you can download it immediately and start reading right away.

Hi Amelia. It occurred to me later yesterday that the Slagle book probably doesn't cover fish oil, which as I'm sure you know, is a popular supplement for use with depression right now. I'm not sure it's one you'd be interested in, but I thought I should bring it up.
OK, I just flipped through my downloaded copy to make sure I didn't give you a bum steer. I do have more reservations about it having done that, though I still think it's as decent a starting point as any. The problem is, although I do have a few more books (most of which I haven't read all the way through -- just the bits and pieces that interested me), none of them stand out as one I can wholeheartedly recommend. What I typically end up doing is looking at multiple sources, including psychobabble.

Thanks Jane. I tried fish oil but it gave me increased anxiety--strange, I know! I've only heard of a few other people with that experience.
Can I ask you--are you on an alt regimen, and would you mind saying what it helps with? I'm desperate to avoid meds, but I always tank without them (and without trying anything else).
