Maca Root Anyone?

Posted by bleauberry on March 27, 2008, at 20:23:26

This is my 3rd attempt at Maca Root powder. I was just wondering who else has taken this, why, and what their experience was?

I initially took it to treat adrenal fatigue and low cortisol. First day nice mood lift and increase of energy. Second day, tired and irritable. Third day, relaxed to almost comatose, really glum and blue, and irritated at the same time. Fourth day, no more.

Tried it again a second time. Same pattern.

Now third time, same pattern so far through day 2. I think my problem is 2-fold. First, even though I am only doing 1/4 tsp in the morning, that is probably way too high of a dose for me. Maca feels real powerful at whatever it does. Second, maybe I should take it at another time of day instead of morning. I'll try bedtime tonight. It konked me out during the day, opposite of what it should do, so we'll see.

I guess Maca works on all hormones. I know from symptoms and lab tests my adrenal hormones and thyroid hormones are whacky, weak, and have been screwed up for at least 3 years. That is a long time of receptor down-regulation, sensitizinig, etc, feedback balance, etc to undo. So maybe that is why I feel so bad getting started.

Two main benefits:
1. My constantly ice-cold hands are warm.
2. Tendonitis pain went from severe to faint by the end of the 2nd day.

Two main drawbacks, so far:
1. Really glum, down, and detached.
2. Really tired.

My guess is that while both adrenals and thyroid are being juiced up, one or the other is taking the lead, with other lagging behind, creating a larger gap between the two than started. Maybe I need time to let them both rise and stabilize. In any case, I need much lower doses to endure. Maybe 1/16 or 1/8 teaspoon.

I remember someone else who liked Maca and their best dose was 1/4 of one tablet.

I loved the taste so much I would mix a heaped teaspoon in a glass of milk, and then I would want to repeat it.

I thought it gave me insomnia (of course, everything seems to) and at that dose it's perhaps not surprising.

when i spoke to someone in a health store they were pushing maca as an aphrodisiac to potentially combat ssri sexual effects. has it done anything for you desire-wise?

Well, yes, maca did enhance libido and rather quickly. But oh my how maca is not a good herb for me. The only benefit was warm hands. Other than that, I felt a strange combination of agitated/disappointed at everything, I mean everything, and yet extremely calm and serene in the face of it. Kind of a "life is pointless, everything sucks, but I don't give a damn" attitude. Strange. And while maca is used for energy boost, it made me so incredibly fatigued I could hardly walk. I am sure my reaction to it is not typical of the general user.

For sexual stuff though, I believe a couple other herbs are better at that than maca. Tonquat Ali and/or Horny Goat Weed are two powerhouse herbs for sex.

This is -exactly- how I (and many others) respond to SSRIs. Worsened anhedonia/concentration, but blunted affect. But I don't like blunted affect.

I took it a while back for menopausal symptoms. I took a fairly high dosage for that. It worked well but it didn't last long. I kept having to up the dosage until I got no more benefit from it at all. I don't remember it working as an aphrodisiac for me.

I'm tempted to go back and try it again at a very small dosage to see if it does anything for me.

I am trying MACA and it seems it started to work, I feel more energy and better mood.

I also take .025 mg alprazolam at night. it may be helping but the energy I think it is from the MACA

The MACA seems to take a few hours to peak (2 at least), so take it in the morning.

I hope the results keep improving, I need it.
