SAM-e side-fx.: anxiety+agitation - do they pass?

Posted by SAM-e old on June 13, 2009, at 2:57:32

hello,
I started taking 400mg SAMe in the mornings and had bad anxiety, agitation and bad-memory flashbacks. I then went down to 200mg a day, now 200mg every other day. the side effect persist, though less at lower dosage/frequency.

Do the side-effects I metioned eventually pass?

Or is it unlikely they will pass and I will either have to lower the dose to 100mg or 50mg ... or perhaps not take it at all as my body does not seem to like it?

I don't know if it is a side effect. SAMe just does not suit some people. At times it has suited me, and at other times not. Most recently I felt I was better without it. And I'd guess it is unlikely to pass.

I suppose that much can be true. do you know of any articles or studies that come to this conclusion. I have read about the low-dosage / high-dosage issue.

I wonder what it is about SAMe than can cause agitation/anxiety in some people.

I don't have any studies. You could try lowering the dose again, or not take it. You are taking it for depression?

I don't know. Some agitating serotonin receptor?

I'm taking it (a) to increase my glutathion level, which is very low and (b) also for depression.

There are other ways of increasing glutathione levels, I assume.

Would one of them be N-acetyl cysteine, taken with vit C?

Might be good for OCD (if you have that)?

NAC is on my plan from my doctor, starting it this weekend.

I dont have fullblown OCD but temporary tendencies every now and then...

I once tested SAMe with NADH and dont recall having had the side effects that I have with SAMe alone ... or NADH alone for that matter. I wonder if the two together "work together"....

I have taken them both, but not together.
