Cigarette smoking

Posted by Lao Tzu on July 4, 2009, at 9:56:15

I'm working on quitting smoking. I have a theory that a combination of things might work. Zyban and Nicotine patch. Buspar and nicotine patch. Buspar or Zyban and Smoke Deter. I wanted to try Buspar again to help with smoking cessation, but my doc won't prescribe it for that purpose. He thinks it won't work. I truly believe it helped me get off cigarettes a few years ago when I spent 9 days in a hospital. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of going off it after I got out, and I went right back to smoking. I don't think Buspar alone is enough for smoking cessation, but perhaps, if you combine it with the patch or Smoke Deter plus a psychological support program, that might work. I've never tried Zyban. My doctor thinks it doesn't work for smoking cessation. Some people say it does. One person said he stopped smoking with the help of Wellbutrin (Zyban) and N-Acetyl Cysteine. Could be a coincidence. Hard to say exactly what will work for one person as opposed to another. My doc says Chantix is the only drug that really works, and he has several people who were able to quit on that drug. However, I have heard of Chantix causing psychiatric symptoms in some people so it's really hard to make a decision about it. You don't know who to trust and believe. You'd like to put all your trust into what the doctor says, but I don't always do that. Anyway, I'm trying the patch and Smoke Deter at the same time. I'm getting some good results, but it's a little too early to make any conclusions. I would very much like to try Buspar again since it might help with the anxiety of quitting. But I'm on a high dose of Risperdal, and I don't know if the Buspar will work well because of that. Also, I've been taking Provigil for years now, and even though it helps with energy and depression, I truly believe that Provigil helped coaxed me into smoking even more than I would without it. That's what happened in the hospital. I stopped taking the Provigil while I was in there and started Buspar. When I got out, I stopped the Buspar and started the Provigil again, and voila, I started smoking again. Anyway, I just wanted to throw some of these ideas out there to anyone looking to quit smoking. Good luck!!
