Advice on mixing fish oils and starflower oil

Posted by Kizzie on September 5, 2010, at 16:25:22

Hi I am just trying to recover from a bout of depression and anxiety which I have had on and off since having PND 11 years ago.
I take 2x 1000mg fish oil capsules plus a multi vit andin each day. I would now like to add starflower ( borage) oil but not sure if can take at the same time and also what dose to take.
I'd really appreciate any advice on this. Thanks

What is PND?

When taking fish oil you want to pay attention the amount of omega 3s in each capsule. One brand may have 600 mg omega 3s per capsule while another may have 300 mg omega 3s. I would shoot for 1 gram or a little more of omega 3s a day. You may want to first try a higher EPA to DHA ratio, maybe 4 to 1. Or just go with the ratio of what the fish oil product you are using probably is, which is likely a 3 to 2 or 4 to 3 ratio of EPA to DHA. If things don't seem to improve, it may not be a bad idea to try cod liver oil, which has a higher DHA to EPA ratio. You can also buy products that have a 4 to 1 DHA to EPA ratio, some do feel better with this.

I think you just need to listen to your body and mind. 2 or 3 1000 mg borage oil capsules a day is probably fine.

What else are you doing to treat your depression and anxiety? Exercise? Any more supplements?

Morgan

I would also suggest at least trying moderate to intense exercise, you may give your brain a much needed boost this way.

Whatever we do, take powerful antidepressants or not, we should all be trying to get the right amount of omega 3s.

angels78, do you take fish oil? Do you believe that putting some nutrients in our body will benefit brain function and possibly mood? Ya know, not everyone wants or needs to take powerful and potentially toxic medications.

Morgan
