I think Bacopa makes me sleepy

Posted by Hombre on December 16, 2010, at 22:34:41

I'm trying out Bacopa Monniera in the form of Bacopin extract, ~150mg per dose. I'm not sure if it helps with memory or cognition, but it might be causing drowsiness and spaciness. If I had to guess why, perhaps it interacts with my meds and affects serotonin levels.

This has happened to me in the past with high dose niacin. What that tells me is that if I weren't on meds, I'd consider taking high dose niacin and bacopa for anxiety.

I'm still not 100% sure about the bacopa, and maybe I can use it PRN like a benzo.

Anyone else notice sedation when taking bacopa with ADs and/or AAPs?

Bacopa is used by some as a sleep aid and is used as the main ingredient in Sleep Ease by TheraVeda.

Well there you go. Next time I'll try taking it when I'm feeling anxious, which should be soon...haha. I guess I could see how it could help concentration by quieting down the mind chatter.

It's kind of nice because I sort of went into the Bacopa experiment not knowing what to expect, but hoping for a better memory and ability to learn. I guess I may have expected something stimulating, but not knowing exactly what to expect allowed me to be somewhat objective when I felt drowsy/chilled out more than once.

Well, I had the operating theory that it kept me awake, but since that is a continuing fact of my life it is liable to be less than informative about particular interventions.

I believe the positive effects on memory take up to a few months with Bacopa.

I can imagine that bacopa could be more stimulating for others. I'm taking three different medications at once, so herbs and supplements will be magnified and their effects will be somewhat different.

I think I could get used to the mild sedation of bacopa, although I feel it may have the potential to make me feel flat. It does seem to block out extraneous thoughts. I imagine it'd be good for anxiety and/or ADHD type symptoms.

I think i'll take it somewhat regularly for at least a few months. Like morgan said, I think 12 weeks is where they noticed significant increases in learning and memory. I think it might actually work to undo the stress-related changes to the hippocampus that result from depression and anxiety. Learning and memory get severely disrupted, at least in my opinion. I might also get into ginkgo later on to add to the effect.
