Doxylamine, alternative to Ambien?

Posted by former poster on February 5, 2011, at 14:25:35

I just wanted to share the success I've had with Doxylamine Succinate for my insomnia. I've tried Lunesta and Ambien with little or no effect. Doxy works much better for me. Cheapest place I've found is in the "sleep aids" shelf at Walmart.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia for what its worth:
>>"One study found that doxylamine succinate is possibly more effective than the barbiturate phenobarbital for use as a sedative".<<

So you do have problems with sleep.

Sleep initiation or sleep maintenance?

Is doxylamine humane, more or less?

Doesn't feel too awful?

Hangover?

I need something to help me sleep more deeply.

It may have been you who said that Remeron/mirtazepine was great in that respect?

At least that is how I found it.

Trazodone is not available here, and the reports of people's experiences and the pharmacology are not encouraging.

I was attracted by the prospect of some mild priapism.

Depth of sleep is important for so many things, perhaps hormones, certainly sex and rest.

Hombre mentioned Planetary Formulas and I found this there.

It has zizyphus in it.

Zizyphus is really good, if not very strong.

Doxylamine seems good for initiation and maitainence. I have problem initiating sleep and waking too early. The elimination half life seems to work just right for getting 8-10hrs of sleep. I've tried other antihistamines such as Hydroxyzine which made me feel a little blunted and strange. I've had sleep problems since the 70's. Benadryl worked good for me. But seemed to wear off in the middle of the night.

Hey man, I'm sure you've tried Melatonin. Maybe you should be taking this whether it makes a big impact or not given evidence for being a potent brain antioxidant. Plus, it's cheap! I take an 8 hour time release by Natrol when I need it, it's 5 mg. I may be getting hooked. This stuff works.

I'm also guessing you've considered all the other natural sleep remedies out there.

Bacopa
Lemon Balm-lower dose for sleep and higher dose for concentration, focus, and memory-also a potent antiviral
Skullcap
Passion flower
Valerian

Thanks Morgan. I'm taking the Now 1mg 2 stage Melatonin and its something I'll continue to take every night. Maybe start taking 2 per night. Sorry for neglecting you and my fellow babblers. I'm going through some personal issues right now, combined with the winter blues. It takes a lot of effort for me to make a post. Thanks for all the supplement recommendations. It has really helped me a lot.
