John,
Had a phone conversation done with a woman at the office who might bring me in for a consultation depending on whether the psychiatrist thinks I am a fit. Haven't heard back from the yet. Definitely give them a call as she was very interested.

ha! just spoke with the same gal. waiting to hear back from her. she said either today or tomorrow.
hope we both get in!
sounds like they will get you going pretty quick IF you meet what they want. she mentioned a 4 hour 'pre-screening' to see if they'll let you in on the study.
good luck joseph.

She finally got back to me today and unfortunately I have a dual diagnosis of OCD so they won't accept me. They are definitely motivated bro so if you have depression and meds are not working to their potential you are in. Sounds like a great study. Keep my updated!

joseph-
looks like i got invited down to ucla for the interview process. i meet with a 'team' of researchers and go thru an interview, psych history, testing, and even a eeg of my brain. she said it takes about 4 hours.
it will be either wed, thur, or fri of next week. i'll keep you posted.
if i get in on the study i think i might start a thread here on babble to let others know of my experience.
i hope i get in!
have a great weekend. at least it'll be a little cooler for us, which i prefer in my depressed state. ;)

John i am fired up for you man. Please keep me posted and that would be great to start a thread/blog about it. The nerve it stimulates sounds very promising for neurotransmitter production and regulation. I wish you all the best, hang in there this weekend,

John,
Good luck man! I am so excited for you. I forwarded the study onto my psychiatrist (one of the heads of UCLA) and he said it sounds very promising indeed (he has no affiliation with the study). Keep me posted, I am rooting for you! I am not a fan of LA to be honest! :)

hey joseph-
thanks for remembering me. i appreciate the follow-up. hope you are well.
well, i've been using the device for a week now. no real changes in my depression at this point unfortunately.
it is a 12 week study, so i need to be patient obviously. also, at week 6 they may change the settings if i am not responding by that time.
thanks again for the shout-out.
john
ps i'm curious; what are your ocd symptoms? no problem if you don't want to answer. i'm curious because i wonder if i have a bit of that. well, i know i do. i'm just wondering at what level it becomes a problem.

John,
Sorry to hear about not feeling any effects yet however it is a 12 week program so I wasn't expecting to hear improvements within the first week although I was hoping to I must admit. Hang in there man as I am confident it will help. Is it stressful having the unit on the pillow next to you? I would be worried about lying on top of it and smashing it! :) Ask away about my OCD man I am happy to share. I have gone through it all man. I used to feel like I could see my hair grow, then went through a confessing stage where I had to confess all the guilty things that I thought I had done to everyone, then violent thoughts, then checking to see if I had run over someone etc.. I am doing so much better now however I know it will always have a major presence in my life. It is the guilt that annoys me the most. Hope you are hanging in there man. If they change the settings have them put it up to full throttle! :)

thnx joseph.
i really appreciate you telling me about your ocd. i am so freaked-out about everything i read regarding mental issues that i say 'i got that too!' when in reality several doctors have told me i am just in a very deep unipolar depression.
i guess i was concerned about the ocd possibility because of my ruminating on the same stuff for 19 months now. and, i'm spending a lot of time on the computer researching depression and mental issues.
i usually put the unit on around 4pm and wear it until midnight and then go to bed. tonight i actually just put it on (10pm) so, it will be the first night i'll actually be sleeping with it on. hope it works out.
funny you should say that if it's not working by week 6 have them 'ramp it up!' the meter is measured from 1 to 10. they told me to keep it at 3 to 4 for now. it gives a mellow electrical pulse about every 15 seconds. one night though as i was finishing up i went to turn off the power and i actually turned it up to 10! (felt like 11 ;)) WOW! it was intense and i let out a yelp as i frantically searched for the off button. felt like the real deal; ect! not good and kind of traumatized me in a way because i did have ect last year...
thnx again for staying in touch. i'll keep posting. and yes, i need to be patient. it is a 12 week deal.
talk soon i hope.
take care.

I got my Alpha Stim in 2004 or 2005, I think. Of course, all of the literature and videos say it's a miracle cure. For me, it had, at best, the most tepid and mild of antidepressant effects. I still use it sometimes. It does seem to exert some type of calming effect for me. Just not significant. I also bought a Canadian product around the same time that combined the electric stimulation with binaural beats and visual patterns. That, too, was pretty much a failure. Hey, but all of that stuff is worth a try. If it works, better than medicine, in my book. Good luck.
Chris
