This one. I have a feeling it makes me more depressed.
Which Multi-Vitamins do you favor and do they help your depression or worsen it?
Why would Thorne Basic Nutrients V make me more depressed?

Lamdage22,
I think that it would be hard to say which of the vitamins in the multivitamin supplement that you took might be worsening your depression. My first guess would be that it might be the folates, but the folate dose in the multivitamin that you took doesn't seem to be that high, so I don't know.
I've never noticed any changes in mood that I could attribute to taking a multivitamin. However (and I don't mention this often because I don't think that anyone will believe me), I did notice an increase in pseudohallucinations the last time I took a Centrum multivitamin. I suppose it's possible that the increase in pseudohallucinations could have been caused by something other than the multivitamin, but I don't recall anything else out of the ordinary happening then that might have caused that symptom to worsen.
But anyway, if you seem to notice feeling more depressed (or more psychotic) on a multivitamin or any other supplement, I think that it would be best to compare how you feel while taking it with how you feel without it and then of course to avoid those supplements that seem to lead to a worsening of symptoms. As much as it would be nice to know exactly why your multivitamin might be worsening your depression, just knowing that it does worsen your depression (assuming that it does so) should be all that you really need to know to decide to avoid taking it. As far as recommendations for multivitamins are concerned, I think that if you have problems with some multivitamins that going for a more basic one would probably be best. That's probably what I'll do if I end up taking a multivitamin again.

Lamdage22,
I would consider a "more basic" multivitamin to be one that supplies the necessary vitamins and minerals that we should be getting from our diets without adding very many (if any) extra supplements that might have drug-like effects on mood, whether it's in a good way or a bad way. In other words, a "more basic" multivitamin would be one that would help to protect against any vitamin or mineral deficiencies without the added health effects of various supplements that are found in some multivitamins. Now, a "more basic" multivitamin might not provide as many health benefits as one that has extra ingredients and might not be for everybody. It might not necessarily even be the best option for you. I'm just thinking that if you want the protection from vitamin and mineral deficiencies without the extra ingredients that might alter your mood (especially for worse) that something more basic, as I've described here, might be the safest route to take.

Multi-vitamins usually make me more depressed.
One theory might be that a general multivitamin would enhance methylation which could be problematic for certain individuals.

I have a theory why Multi Vitamin may make me more depressed. Perhaps it is interfering with Lithium Orotate uptake.
I will try and take the multi-Vitamins in the evening and the Lithium in the morning.

My guess is the 100 mg of Choline Citrate. Supplemental choline tends to make me depressed. I think that's what may be happening to you. I advise choosing multi-vitamins which contain little or no supplemental choline (phosphatidylcholine seems to be okay).

Hello new here came across your thread on Multivitamins.
I have definitely experienced a problem of low mood/depression from taking multivitamins but I managed to isolate the offender. In my case it was Cyanocobalamin which is synthetic (Cheap) vitamin B12. I have also noticed this in the injectable multi B vitamins. Now if I get any B12 it is the natural form of methylcobalamin. My further inquiries have led me to find that this is pretty common. I also suspect folic acid is a problem for me and have been tested for the gene mutation that causes a lack of ability to assimilate folic acid. I also suspect the B12 and folic acid problems are related. Anyway it doesnt seem that your particular Multi has these compounds. BUT, I also suspect a problem with the other forms of Vitamin b12 that are not Methylcobalamin, eg adeno?? or dibeco?? something like that, because I tried those too and was not really happy with the results. There is another thing that B12 is poorly absorbed through the gut and really needs to be sublingual or injection or patch. Personally I have had great success with probiotics to treat depression and also vitamin status, but only the good ones, not just over the counter types. I guess my purpose of adding this is that yes you can definitely find that multivitamins can make things worse. I usually try to add the vitamins or other supplements seperately and see what the effect of each one is. also do your research to see what forms of each vitamins are reccomended by others.
This is the end of the thread.
