adding coenzyme q10, alpha lipoic acid

Posted by Christ_empowered on February 20, 2015, at 13:20:09

I'm adding coenzyme q10 + alpha lipoic acid to my ever-expanding supplement line up. I'm taking 100mgs of some kind of super coQ10 from vitacost, kaneka something...its supposed to do more, at lower doses, than normal coQ10. We'll see.

I'm also adding 600mgs AM + 600mgs PM of alpha lipoic acid. I'm thinking that at least some of my brain problems come/came from intense stress. I used to have noticeable premature aging, pre-Orthomolecular (and good skin care, lol). I'm now looking a tad bit younger than my age, and my psychiatric symptoms are more easily managed w/ meds, w/o too many side effects (no stiff gait, twitches, TD, excessive cognitive impairment and/or blunting, etc.).

Only problem is...my supplement line up is getting ridiculous. I blame some of my mild OCD-ish tendencies for this, lol.

Anyone else tried ALA, coenzyme Q10, Orthomolecular?

Hey Christ_empowered,

Good luck with your new supplements. I've taken both coenzyme q10 and alpha lipoic acid myself. When I took coenzyme q10 when I had psychotic symptoms prior to going on Abilify, I actually noticed a reduction in psychotic symptoms for maybe a few hours each time I would take it, but it also seemed to slow my thoughts and deplete my energy too much. However, when I took coenzyme q10 with Abilify, I didn't seem to notice any problems with slowed thinking or reduced energy. In fact, the supplement may have helped with those problems when I took it alongside Abilify, at least at first. As far as alpha lipoic acid is concerned, I've pretty much always benefited from it every time I'd start taking it (mainly as far as energy and concentration are concerned), but then seemingly lose my benefits after staying on the supplement for more than a day or two. I even tried a time-release version of alpha lipoic acid once, but that seemed to mostly affect me the same way the regular non-time-release stuff affected me.

Have you started with the new supplements yet? Are you noticing anything early on? Again, I wish you luck.

Tomatheus

the package from vitacost arrived yesterday. Today is day #2 of the kaneka uber-coq10 (once daily) and then alpha lipoic acid (600mgs x 2 daily).

I read that ala recycles coq10, c, and vitamin E, soooo...I'm thinking/hoping it'll help me get more mileage out of my existing supplement routine. I feel calmer, both mentally and physically, and more focused, but...

...that could easily be a placebo effect. Its interesting that ala recylces C, because the effect so far is sort of like what happened when I tried adding a mid-day C dose to my line up...calmer, more focused, all that. Maybe I'm just imagining things, though...

...thanks for your interest, Tomatheus. What supplements are you on right now?

Hey Christ_empowered,

Thanks for responding to my questions. It definitely seems to be a good thing that you're feeling calmer and more focused since starting the coenzyme q10 and alpha lipoic acid, even if it might be due to the placebo effect. Maybe these two supplements will ultimately turn out to be helpful additions to your regimen, although I'm sure that you'll need quite a bit more time to evaluate your response.

Other than the niacin and vitamin D3 that I've been taking for a while now alongside my Abilify, I'm currently taking oil of oregano and olive leaf extract. I started the oil of oregano Tuesday and added the olive leaf extract into the mix Wednesday. I'm basically taking both supplements for their antimicrobial properties, in case I might have an infection that might be contributing to my symptoms. My white blood cell count has always come back as being elevated since my first psychiatric hospitalization eight years ago, although the few tests I've had done for specific infections have come back negative. Up to this point, I've had some temporary success with antimicrobial supplements, but nothing that's lasted. Olive leaf extract never really seemed to help much -- at least not for very long -- when I took it alone, but so far, I'm noticing the usual improvement in my energy and concentration with the two supplements together. So, we'll see what will happen.

I hope that your treatment regimen, including the many supplements that you're taking, will continue to serve you well. Have a good night.

Tomatheus
