Probiotics and preventing depression

Posted by FrancesP on October 19, 2015, at 21:51:56

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience that can shed light on the following question:

In people without a diagnosis, can the use of probiotics or prebiotics prevent depression?

Many thanks.

I've tried many probiotics and prebiotics. My favorite probiotic is kefir and my favorite prebiotic is parboiled (also called converted) white rice. It has to be cooled after cooking. Warm rice is much less effective as a prebiotic, so I just eat it straight out of the fridge first thing in the morning. It's somewhat stimulating, so if I eat it late in the day, it makes it difficult for me to fall asleep.

Here's a site about resistant starch as a prebiotic:

Could eating cold parboiled rice have prevented my depression? Possibly, if I'd started eating it as a child. Another thing that I think might have prevented me from developing depression, if I'd received it much earlier, is neurofeedback. As Benjamin Franklin said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
