I have had a difficult time finding an adequate treatment for chronic depression that is most likely a presentation of bipolar disorder. Any comments regarding these two substances would be helpful.
1) L-theanine
2) L-carnitine
Thank you.

i like l-theanine. i haven't taken it in a while, but...during a rough patch of anxiety and general low mood, id take the Suntheanine version. they license it to numerous companies. i went for suntheanine because i assumed they'd do a better job with quality control. anyway...
i always tried to take mine on an empty stomach. i tried to keep the dosage high(ish), around 1200mgs, divided...
and it did help. i was actually thinking about reordering. i got good results from the Dr's Best label of Suntheanine...150mgs per capsule, if i remember correctly.

Thanks. Is L-theanine more effective for anxiety than it is for depression?
Any thoughts on L-carnitine?

never taken l-carnitine, sorry. i'd take alpha lipoic acid, now and then...to boost the ongoing protocol and detox, basically...and many vitamin places offer alpha lipoic acid with carnitine. i think its for additional antioxidant effects? sorry, that's about all the info I can offer.
l-theanine was great for me, mostly for anxiety but it also offered a mild "lift" to my mood. again, i always took the Suntheanine version...its a bit more $$$, but they seem to be good about quality control, and they also fund small studies.
one study the Suntheanine people funded was in people with a label of Schizophrenia. I think 800mgs/day was the dose, for 4-8 weeks, with ongoing 'standard treatment.' the results showed improvement in mood and a reduction in anxiety, plus an improvement in sleep.
hope this helps :-)
