My T just recommended "Children of the Self-Absorbed", so I ordered it. Has anyone else come across it? What did you think? Was it helpful for you?
While we're on the subject, what about "The Drama of the Gifted Child?" What's the verdict on Alice Miller?
Thanks!

"drama of the gifted child", also known as "prisoners of childhood" is a classic, very nicely written
I just took a look at the copy on my shelf...it's got a lot of orange highlighter on the pages (I love to see what I highlight and what I write on the pages-makes me laugh :-)
I wrote on one page "What would you do if I sang out of tune?"
I am so weird, lol ;-)

I'm about halfway through "Children of the Self-Absorbed" now, and I heartily recommend it. Even if you're not the child of someone with what the book calls a "destructive narcissistic pattern" of behavior, there's still a lot of good stuff in here. It's got a lot of good information about certain sorts of behavior patterns in those who've been invalidated, and had boundaries erased by others. You know, people like me...
I'm just now getting into protective strategies, and coping strategies. Empowerment strategies are in here, too. It's been valuable, although it doesn't fit me comfortably -- in fact, I'm going to pass it on to my mother, since a lot of it seems ot fit her pretty well. (She doesn't fit much of the DNP described in the book. But other members of her family sure do!)
So, that's an update, and a recommendation.
This is the end of the thread.
