The loved one by Evelyn Waugh

I read this in school. I liked it. It is maybe a little strange for some people.

I'm going to see if the library has it. I've seen the movie and it is strange to say the least.

ANYTHING by Evelyn Waugh!!

I love Evelyn Waugh! My favorite might be "Black Mischief," or possibly "Put Out More Flags." Maybe it's "Vile Bodies" -- another that was made into a movie, called "Bright Young Things." Actually, his first one, "Decline and Fall," is also brilliant -- just a howl all the way through.

Waugh is one of my very favorite writers. As if that wasn't clear enough for anyone to make out...

I thought I would enjoy 'Put Out More Flags'.
That's the one with Guy Crouchback?
Anyway I couldn't get through it for one reason or another.

What's a good one to start with?
(Apart from Brideshead.)

Hi Sigismund,

I haven't read much Waugh (stop yelling, Racer) though I did ready and enjoy "A Handful of Dust."

On Racer's recommendation I just ordered "Vile Bodies" from the library, after I read it then I will get "The Loved One." I will submit book reports with proper margins.

Thanks for your recommendations. "the loved one" is the only book I read by Evelyn Waugh and I loved it. But there will be some time left in my holidays for a second one by E.W.

No, Guy Crouchback is from the "Sword of Honor" trilogy -- "Men at Arms," "Officers and Gentlemen," and "The End of the Battle." "Put Out More Flags" is Basil Seal, who "stars" in several other books, including "Black Mischief," which is sometimes seen as racist, alas. (I think it's great fun, and so clearly satirical that it probably shouldn't be taken seriously enough for any such accusation.)

For the first taste of Evelyn Waugh, I think I'd offer up his first novel, "Decline and Fall," followed closely by his second -- which includes many of the same characters -- "Vile Bodies." As Poet said to me privately, it really wasn't Agatha Runcible's fault that someone placed a large object in front of her...

They're mostly fun books. "Brideshead Revisited" is a bit maudlin at times, but it's still enjoyable. I named my kitten after the teddy bear.

I hope that you enjoy anything you might choose to read.

Almost Done With The Loved One

It's a very quick and enjoyable read, the characters are wonderfully warped though as I read it I see the actors who played them in the film. Which is okay, I love the late Robert Morris.

I don't know what I'll read next, time to visit the library site and see what they have. I love a library system that sends the book from any county library to the one nearest me. Though I still have that issue with used books and wash my hands way too much, but I can't afford to buy new. One must suffer for enjoyment.

Great satire, but mean, without the
melodramatic tones in Aldous Huxley's
"Antic Hay" for example. He's a good
writer, but i wouldn't want to sleep with
him. :-)

Well no. Me neither. And that goes for Kingsley Amis too.
