My 11 year old went to overnight camp for the very first time today. She'll be back this Friday. She's testing the waters away from her nest, and I'm so proud that she has gotten this far. Last summer, she couldn't even imagine how kids could leave their homes ... willingly ... and head off to camp for adventures.
As soon as I got home, I went into her room and started cleaning. It felt so good to purge her room of clutter. I did ask her permission prior to my "mommy is on a cleaning binge, leave me alone for a few hours". When I walk past her room now, I smile for the accomplished task (well, I still haven't tackled her closet or dresser) and for the progress this year has brought for the both of us.
I can't wait to hear from her (and if I will hear from her). This camp does post random photos on their web site, so I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of her.
Now that I finished the cleaning, I feel a little sad. Maybe being in her room helped me feel connected to her a little longer. She is such a firecracker, the house will lose half of its energy source.
Anyone else have kids going to camp??

Yup, my son left for 8 weeks. He's 13 (almost 14) and it's his 4th year doing it.
First year was a little tough, but he really loves it overall.
His camp has the web photos too, which is nice.
Cleaning his room is on my to-do list too.
Let us know how your daugther liked it.

My daughter left for camp on Wednesday. This is her 2nd year, and she was so pumped she couldn't sleep. Last year she went with a bunch of friends, this year there are 14 of them from her group who went together, including her boyfriend! ; ) (don't worry I trust them implicitly!) Anyway, camp was such a great experience for her, and I hope she does it every year all through high school. She'll be a freshman this coming year.
I hope your daughter's experience is just as wonderful. Did she go with a friend? Our camp post pics too. It's great to be able to see them having so much fun!

Yes, she had a GREAT experience! Sleep deprieved, but full of stories and full of herself ... it was nice to see and hear. She struggles with the girls at her school but she made a lot of friends at camp. One girl is coming over next week for a sleep over, and she will be attending the same middle school next year as my daughter.
My daughter did go with a friend, but I don't think this "friend" has the best qualities as a friend. My daughter is slowly figuring this out. Yes, the camp posted photos too. It's such a great idea.
How long did your daughter go away for? I'm hoping my girl will go for 2 weeks next summer.Annierose

Too bad about the friend. That's always hard, but you have to trust your gut.
My daughter went with a group of 14 friends, and they were gone for 5 days. She hopes to go every summer, all through high school. Next year they are all planning to go back together to work at the camp for 2 weeks, not as counselors, but as what they call "life guards", which isn't actually a lifeguard at all. They clean, help cook, serve food, and work the various activities. When she is in college she thinks she'd like to be a counselor. She is pumped! And she always comes home SO spiritually enhanced. Her camp does the online photos too, as well as email, and a video, which is always a blast to watch.
Glad your daughter had fun and made some nice friends.
