New movie about weight and body issues

Posted by Racer on September 20, 2008, at 21:21:53

I went to a workshop today, which included a viewing of a new movie, called "Disfigured." It begins with an anorexic trying to join a Fat Advocacy group, and follows the relationship she forms with one of the women in the group.

I found the movie disturbing in a number of ways, and recommend it to people who are struggling with body and eating issues. I suspect it is likely to be disturbing to many people, so I'm offering this warning.

Some portions of the movie's anorexic did ring true for me, although she was far more functional and seemed far too healthy to me. Also, some of her social interactions seemed unrealistic, in that she seemed far more assertive, less compliant, than many/most of the anorexics I've known. The heavier woman was wonderful -- although, again, I think she may have been portrayed as a little extreme in her self-confidence. She was lovely, and came across as quite attractive, which I did like seeing.

I hope that many people with eating disorders will see this movie, and that it will bring up questions that help us -- all of us, the emotional eaters, the anorexics, the bulimics, the bingers, and those who are simply uncomfortable in their skin due to their weight -- find our way towards a healthy relationship with food.

This is the end of the thread.
