1. Go airport, get onto plane, try to feel anticipation and excitement, rather than just plain old scared to death. Do this for five hours. (or-- try to remember to do this, to breathe, to think positive thoughts about how safe airplanes really are, how I sit at home without going anywhere for five hours and am not trapped there-- and therefore am not trapped in an airplane, that this is not "just too hard for me" etc etc etc)

2. Yeah, do number one.

It might have been youth, but airports used to be fun, a long time ago; they're not fun now.

The flight to Bangkok and then to Europe once had an empty section at the back, and people would gather there and SMOKE CIGARETTES and drink beer and talk to each other.

Yes, back in the day, when everyone was more carefree, and daredevilish, you didn't have to show an id everytime you breathed, or wanted to look at the books in a library, or sit in on a class.

that back of the plane sounds like fun-- if I were my adolescent self--there were a few good points about all that, beyond the chaos and everything falling apart.

can you believe I actually hitchhiked by myself? Anyone who does that these days is completely out of their mind--

The privacy rules really bug me too. You can't get details of anything. I set up a phone account and an internet account linked to it, and made it clear that any of our family were cleared to get details on the phone account. (The kids are better at this than we are.) But I didn't make this clear on the internet account. Same company. So when my wife is wondered why the fees are so high and wanted to ask about which plan we were on the answer was 'Nyet'.

OTOH, at a music festival recently I was struck by the friendliness of so many of the people there. You see someone and talk about the bus line. Later you see each other and it's like old friends meeting up. This was sometimes drug assisted, showing the limits of sobriety.

Nad-- how was your flight?

I hope it was uneventful. Maybe you were sedated like the transport of other dangerous mammals in the air?

maybe you've got your computey with you on your travels?

hugs,

Hi, Llurpsie.

The flight started in a bad way,in that I had spoken to the airline and they said the plane had a particular layout that I was comfortable with-- but, as we were boarding, they announced they had changed it, and substituted a much more crowded and unpleasant lay-out that was exactly the one I was trying to avoid. Plus my bf and I weren't sitting together unless you count being across the isle, with one seat a half length behind the other.

So as I was freaking out, and was trying to get my bf to get off the plane with me-- and my bf was trying to insist that it would be all right-- this woman right behind us, informed me that I had "rockin' seats, and you should be happy about them." At which point, I literally said to her, "Um-- shut up!--this is my issue, not yours, so keep out of it." It was pretty embarrassing, although I think she sort of deserved it-- I wish I hadn't been quite that rude. I think using that expression is really awful. I would never do it in my right mind.

However, I was so drugged by then, having taken large quantities of several anti-anxiety drugs, plus a few drinks, that I fell sleep right after takeoff. (My bf prevailed on this poor guy who unwillingly gave up his window seat, so we could sit together.)

The rest of the trip was amazingly uneventful, from which I draw the conclusion that I have, actually, found a dose of drugs that will subdue even a raving gorilla.

I don't like being so out of it-- but actually it's worth it not to be terrified and retraumatized.

I'm not overly excited about being here yet-- although I'm trying to convince myself--well, actually, maybe I'm not trying very hard right now-- that it's worth it. I guess I should put more effort into making it a good experience, dbt-ally.

Maybe it's a let-down after all the effort I poured into convincing myself that I could get through the takeoff and flight without falling apart.

Seriously, though, I don't know how I feel about the trip in retrospect. Maybe I was too dazed to feel afraid, and I don't like being that asleep. I do remember the movie I watched, so I cant have been so unaware of my surroundings, but I really didn't feel any fear during the flight, except at the beginning of its being so crowded and dense, of having so little space.

But I know that I am still afraid of flying, so I'm not sure what I do take from the experience.

Nad,
you did awesome. Well, it's a strange feeling-- to have *knowledge* of fear decoupled from the experience of fear.

hmm

Hope you're enjoying the trip-- being there, that is--

I swear I responded to this thread earlier. It must have been swept away, however...
