What do the ashes on the forehead represent?
(Hey -- lapsed protestant here, so what do I know about these things?)
Thanks for any information anyone chooses to offer me.

Thank you. So, it's the ashes from last year's Palm Sunday, but what is represented? (Besides looking silly? ;-D ) Is it to do with rebirth/resurrection? Like a phoenix? Or is something else going on?
Thank you, by the way. I truly do want to know, and appreciate your taking the time to explain.

Actually, the ashes represent us. From ashes we were made, to ashes we shall return. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
It reminds us of our mortality.I don't remember the actual words the priest uses as he applies them, but that's the general ideal.
