Love analogy

Posted by SteelyDan on April 24, 2008, at 10:54:20

When i have learned to Love God better than my wife, i shall love my wife better than i do now. In so far as i learn to love my wife at the expense of God and instead of God, i shall be moving towards the state in which i shall not love my wife at all. When first things are put first, second things are not surpressed but increased.

I think St John of the Cross says somewhere something to the effect that...
Unless the soul is divested of the love of all created beings it cannot be possessed by divine union.

I read TS Eliots account of how this makes sense, but have naturally forgotten it.
