My Son Died after taking an overdose of EfexorXR

Posted by ozzymac on April 25, 2004, at 23:06:51

My son died on the 27th of Narch 2004 after taking an overdose of Efexor XR. Everybody says it shouldn't kill you, but it did. This was after having his dosage rates changed. We are waiting for the Autopsy report to confirm what he ended up actually dying from. If you know anyone who is new to taking Efexor or Efexor XR or they have just had there dosage rates changed please keep a very close watch on them. My son showed no signs that he was going to do anything on the morning of his overdose, but previously during the past week he had complained about his dosage not working and having pains in his head. So watch them closely maybe you can prevent something like this happening.

I am so sorry that you lost your son. (I, too, took EffexorXR and the side effects were nasty for me. I got off of it but it was really painful.) I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts........and if you feel like it, keep posting here. This is a very supportive message group.

Thank you for your words of support, they are much appreciated. Have you ever had your Efexor XR dosage split into a twice a day dosage. My son was taking 225mg in the morning and at his last visit to the Dr he uped it to 300mg but he was told to take 150mg in the morning and the other 150mg at night. I was under the impression that XR is meant to be a once a day dose only?

My sincere sympathy for your loss, I understand what you feel.

My wife died froma seizure disorder on 12/16/03. She was an epileptic and bipolar, her doctor had my wife taking 600mgs of effexor xr and 90 mgs of remeron, she also took other meds but am told that it was the effexor xr that killed her.

I understand that the super high dose her crazy shrink gave her no doubt induced the seizure that she never awoke from.

Through this and some other boards I realize what real rat poison this stuff is and hope many read our posts and think twice about putting this sh*t in their system.

God bless you and your family.

My thoughts go out to you on the loss of your wife. Thank you for your comments. I agree the 600mgs seem to be a very high dose rate of Effexor. It is totally unreal what some Drs end up getting away with. As you said hopefully more people will read these type of posts and realize that Effexor isn't always what it is jacked up to be.
All the best for the future.

Thank you for your kind thoughts and wishes. They are much appreciated:-)
Do you or do you know anyone who is currently taking Efexor XR, as I am trying to find out if it is normal for dosages to be split as my sons was. As the XR version is meant to be taken only once aday.
Thanks once again.
Craig

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like follow-ups regarding the medication itself to be redirected to the main Psycho-Babble board:

While those regarding grief and loss stay here. Thanks,

Bob

Ozzy - I'm so sorry for you loss. It was sooo recent, you must still be in shock. If you feel like sharing more, tell us more about your son. Emmy

Hi Emmy,
Thanks for your kind thoughts.
What can I say. he was just an ordinary young man who just couldnt get over this depression thing he was suffering from. He was 24, went through different stages of using drugs, and crap like that, but we didn't give up hoping that one day he might of come good. But its pretty difficult when its hard to get proper treatment or effective treatment.By the way we are in Australia. There is currently an investigation going on as to why he died at the hospital, as through out the afternoon on admittance and the night his stats were good, except by the morning things started getting bad, he suffered a couple of respritory arrests when they transferred him from one hospital to the next and then during another one they were unsuccesful at ressuscitating him. We are just working through different things at this time, still waiting for the final coroners report etc. One other strange thing the hospital didn't even bother doing any type of poison control like giving activated charchoal etc all they were concerned with were the seizures which are a part of effexor xr overdose, even on a couple of websites to do with effexor xr it recomends administering charchoal for overdoses. Oh well. All we can hope for is that the Hospitals learn from there mistakes and they don't do the same for someone else. Thankyou for caring. :->

Thanks for sharing about your son. I hope that the investigation will help out.
Emmys sends her caring and concern, she is no longer posting on PB.
It's hard to lose anyone...but to lose a child is one of the hardest to bear.
My partner lost a child in a fire and this has haunted him ever since. We never get over it...but with time the edges of pain sometimes get softer.

Am curious, since last we communicated you said that you were awaiting coroners report, have you received it yet, regarding my wife's death, attorneys requested medical records from all her physicians on March 4, with exception of her shrink all have complied, would love to have some closure, prayers for your family and your son.
