hi all,
I need an iron supplement that won't make me feel sick.I take a multivitamin (one of the major brands) with 100% RDA of iron, because I'm a woman, and I have had low iron levels in the past.
The problem is that it gives me a stomachache. If I take it with breakfast, I want to puke. If I take it on an empty stomach, I can't eat for hours. If I take it at bedtime, with a little food, I get a stomachache.
I've done really well and taken it for 4 days straight now, but I just had an "intestinal crisis" to put it politely. My stomach is still cramping, and I don't feel well.
I need an alternative iron source supplement. I'm positive that it's the iron in the multivitamin. Ferrous fumarate.
Thank you!

Lurps, are you sure you need iron?
Ferrous fumarate is obviously no good for you.
How long since you had your iron levels tested?

Well, this spring I was at the low-normal range for my hematocrit
and from March-June I was basically living off of pure carbohydrates. I had a very poor diet. Very poor.
My nails have a slew of white spots, which can indicate deficiencies in zinc and/or protein, and a variety of other things.
I wasn't taking a multivitamin that had iron. I didn't realize it, but when I bought the new bottle of multivitamins and they were making me pukey, I looked. The only difference is the ferrous fumarate.
yuck.
Anyways. Women my age need iron becuase we lose blood. My friend who was training to do Chinese medicine took a look at my mucuous membranes inside my mouth and eyelids and told me how to recognize when I needed more meat in my diet (too pale and pink. needs more red.)
I had a burger last night. it was good. maybe I should try harder to get the iron from heme foods. I like red meat. I feel better when I eat red meat at least once or twice a week.

My doctor is always looking at my creatine/urea ratio and saying I need more protein. Something to do with maintaining lean muscle mass.
Perhaps there are iron containing foods you could eat?
