Allergies

Posted by johnnyj on September 28, 2006, at 10:45:36

I just found out today that I have a severe allergy to dust mites among others. I told my wife what the doctor said about what to do in the bedroom, etc. She says I am taking this too far and our house is clean. She refuses to read what the doctor gave me and tells me it is my fault because I work outside and bring dust in. I can't believe we had this argument. She says she vacuums and the reading material says this is not effect. She says that I need to change my habits and the house is fine. I don't get it. No support anywhere.

Hi Johnny,

I also have severe allergies, and doing the things to help the allergies like mattress covers and stuff like that do really help a lot.
I think maybe you wife could be taking this personally, like she is bad homekeeper, and you having allergies to dust, she might be feeling a little gulity. Maybe that is why she is saying it is your fault. (she see's it as a reflection of her)

Well anyways, why not take it upon yourself to do some of the changes for you, it is your house too, and you will feel much better when you do. I hope you have some good allergy meds, because they will help a lot in time. Good luck! ;-)

Hey there, I agree with Happyflower, I think your wife is feeling wounded because she thinks she is being critized for keeping an unclean house.

I would suggest you try to explain to her the difference between normal people and those with allergies - ie the house is totally clean for normal people but for you with your allergy, its not that its not clean, but its a dustmite thing.

Perhaps liken it to people with peanut allergies - they have to be extra careful when eating things. You just have to be extra careful with mattresses etc.

BTW you'd love it here in Finland - they even have special conpartments in trains which are for allergy sufferers.

Take care
