Anyone know how to read an MRI?

Posted by Racer on October 26, 2007, at 13:27:39

I had an MRI done, and will see the doctor next week, but I'm curious: there was a largish area on my hip that was solid, opaque, white on the film. Does anyone know what that means? My first thought was "air," but I know nothing, and am not quite sure where to start looking for information...

Anyone have any breadcrumbs for me to follow?

As long as it was opaque. It's when you can't see through it and is a solid mass that I would be concerned. I have a cyst on my breast that is well defined and opaque. It's been that way for years.

I think that's true if it's a soft tissue MRI with contrast. This was a non-contrast, musculoskeletal MRI, for joint pain. I think that's different?

Does anyone know?

Thanks for your answer, by the way, and I am glad to hear your cyst is stable.

Turns out it's fluid, and that means new drugs

I saw the ortho today, and he says that the opaque white spot is fluid. There's fluid in the joint, and it's also formed a cyst in the soft tissue -- the joint couldn't contain it, so it moved into the soft tissue. The radiologist thought it might possibly be a tear, but it's in an inaccessible area, and anyway -- it's much more likely arthritic changes. There's also some noticeable bone loss.

So, now I'm taking a drug called Daypro, to try to bring down the inflammation. When I looked it up at rxlist.com, the list of possible side effects was not fun -- third in the list was death, and depression was on there, too. I have to admit, the first pill seemed to reduce the pain some.

Joy.

How are you feeling a couple of days in on the new medication? Still helping?
