Just read on another board for bones that if we could develop a pill to remove serotonin from the gut our bones, arthritis, osteo, all would then begin to grow healthy bone away. I's impossible and don't we all need some serotonin? What is this about? Phillipa

A common misconception is meds "add" serotonin as in increased volume of.... Meds like SSRI's merely inhibit the reuptake of serotonin - thus, in theory, having it where should be. There are no serotonin removers or additives that I am aware of. Bodies make enough of this neurochemical but the theory is isn't where it needs to be in those w/ certain mental illnesses. My "grrr" gets up when I see someone say a med CONTAINS serotonin.

I'm not kidding I'm seriously confused on this can you explain to me. I think SSRI's added serotonin hence why people experienced stomach issures sometimes. Obviously what I was taught was wrong. Thanks Phillipa

I really don't know how better to explain it. In terms of the gut - 80% of the entire body's serotonin is in the gut... naturally as the way we are made. As a neurotrans it aids and is greatly responsible for alot of body processes and functions not just for mood.
In terms of bone stuff, serotonin, or rather the messing w/ the concentration of serotonin at the synaptic level, has become a big bad scary thing BUT I'm of the opinion we don't have enough solid info to come to any conclusions on that. I feel it needs more research and it might be currently overplayed. Anyway, bottom line is we can't function w/out it. It's pretty essential.
