meds and psychiatrist ethics

Posted by lorbech on June 26, 2006, at 5:50:42

Rapid cycling bi-polar successfully on 750mg Trileptal and 300mg lithium.

My 12-year treating psychiatrist gave patients 60 days to find new psychiatrist (with no referrals). Called 25 and several said my age prevented them from treating me. Seems to me older patients are better at taking meds as directed and keeping doctor informed of side affects and allergies than are younger people.

Could you explain a little more, Lorbech. How old are you? There are pdocs who specialize in treating adolescents (and even children), so there must be someone.

Can you ask any other doctors for a referral to a pdoc? Like a GP. Or even a partner or associate of your old pdoc, who could act as a source of referral.

It's not a good thing that you were left stranded with out resources. Maybe there's some exigency that your pdoc didn't want to burden you with, that forced his/her abrupt disappearance.

Thx for response, Jost. I'm 68. My primary phys. will respond 7/24 to my question, would she prescribe if insurance and I line up someone to evaluate periodically. Have apptmt tomorrow with psychiatrist whose arm was twisted by mental health people at our insurance company. If this fails, we'll just have to press on.
