Bi Polar II or what?

Posted by Rani on August 14, 2006, at 22:33:20

I am considering that I might be BiPolarII and am waiting to go to the psychiatrist (in 6 weeks) I wonder what other people's experiences have been prior to being diagnosed. Did anyone have any insight into what was going on? or suspect BPII? I dont have massive hypomania episodes but have times when I am energetic, motivated, happy but also times when I am crying all day, cant think straight, have trouble sleeping, racing thoughts. The problem is that when I am down is usually when I am more agitated and my mind is going 300x normal rate and have terrible anxiety. Sometimes I cant distinguish between when I am up or down as it feels like both (like elation with a desperation attached to it).
Anyone relate to this?
I have been taking Luvox low dose for 12 months to deal with what was initially diagnosed with anxiety disorder but I think they actually tip me over into the high and low places. My family doctor has told me to commence on Lexapro today and I am so nervous about taking another med.

Hi, nice to meet you. Some of your symptoms are close to mine. I've mostly been diagnosed as depressed, but did have a bipolar diagnosis for a while. I think what makes it hard to figure out is - When I feel good, is that normal or hypomania? , and - When I'm very angry/agitated, is that a form of the depression or a form of mania.

I don't have a clear decision in my own mind right now, but I can relate. I've never taken luvux or lexapro either, but it is common to take two meds for bipolar.

If you haven't been to the psychobabble board here yet, it is about med questions. There is a lot of knowledge there.

Hi, Rani.

I've read that sometimes SSRI's can cause hypomania. I don't know that much about it, because I don't use SSRIs, but I recommend looking through the main Psychobabble pages. There's search function on the page, for the archives.

I've noticed discussions of this topic at various times, even if not this last few weeks. (There may be mention of it now also.)

Try looking through those archives, and you'll find some helpful comments. There are many people who have recorded their own experiences and their research. Also, there are many people who have posted here who have a lot of knowledge about different areas relating to depression, BP I and II, and other psychiatric areas.

Good luck! and Welcome,

Jost
