For 3 1/2 years I have suffered with anxiety and depression. My meds are the highest they will give me considering my age. I just transferred schools and I loved it. Everything was going great which is weird in a new place (I don't do change well), until last week. I am miserable. I was thinking of going to the schools counseling center. A professor of mine told his students he would even walk us down, but that we shouldn't be taking the major if we were needing counseling. So I found this and decided to see if it helps. I feel like I am going to fall apart. I want to be alone, but then I want someone there. I can't stop crying and I can't concentrate on anything. Should I go to the center? Should I ask my professor to take me down or go alone (which makes me really anxious)? Any advice is appreciated.

Hi, Critter. Welcome to Psychbabble.
I'm sorry you're experiencing such a difficult time at school. Can you say what happened last week to change your mood? Why did your professor say you shouldn't be in the class if you needed counseling?
You might want to try posting this on the Psychology board if you think it's an emotional or social issue. Otherwise, the Social board-- which is for any kind of post, not only light, friendly ones-- is often where people go for support. Those boards get a lot more repeat posters than the newbies board, or many others, and you're more likely to get responses.
If you describe yourself and your school experience, I'm sure people will be able to relate.,
Links to different areas of Psychobabble are located at the bottom of the Newbie and other pages-- so take a look. I think you'll find a place where people will be able to help.
By the way, what meds are you taking? There are many knowledgeable posters on meds, and if you think there might be a need for different meds, you'll find the Medication board a good place to go.

I'm sorry you're feeling so bad right now. It could be that you're experiencing the dreaded and dreadful "SSRI Poop Out" on Paxil -- after a while, a lot of people find their SSRI has stopped working for them. No one really knows why, but there's a lot of speculation out there -- often delivered in rather absolute and definitive terms. The bottom line on it, though, is that no one really knows why it happens. The good news is that, very often, for many people, one of the other SSRIs will work as well, and switching can bring you back to remission. It's worth discussing with your doctor.
As for your professor, you don't say what major you're talking about, but that's a terrible thing to say! So, uh, which is better? Hiding the fact that you're struggling, or recognizing it and addressing it? Hm... I can't think of a single discipline in which the first is preferable. And EVERYONE has some area of his or her life in which some sort of counseling would be beneficial -- it might be called coaching, or counseling, or therapy, but think about it: life coach, time management coach, clutter consultant, career counselor, academic advisor, football coach, psychotherapist, etc. There's something out there that would be helpful for anyone, if they choose to explore it.
Nadezda is absolutely correct -- this is a great place for support and there are a lot of great people here. (I'm biased -- I happen to think that Nadezda is one of the best, and one of the most generous.) I hope you find the support and information you need, and I hope it's helpful for you.
Best luck, and do explore the other boards.
Also, if you go to the registration area, you can activate BabbleMail, which would allow others to contact you privately, without disclosing any identifying information. You may not wish to do so, and that's fine, I just want you to be aware of the feature and how it works. BabbleMail uses whichever email address you've used to register, and what comes into your inbox is from dr-bob.com, saying "Babblemail from" whoever. Your email address is never disclosed to the sender, nor to the recipient. (I just want you to know that there's full privacy -- only Dr Bob himself has access to any identifying information about you. Even the deputies here won't have that access.)
Best luck to you, and my warmest welcome.

Thank you very much! I am a social work major so the professors reasoning is that if we need help then we can't help others (our clients). I think getting the help though or knowing that I need the help should be a sign of strength to him. I don't know what he will do, but I went down to the counseling center and checked it out today just to see what it was like. Thank you for your help. I am still getting familiar with this so I don't know how all the features work.
This is the end of the thread.
