Vigil for Cindy Sheehan

Posted by Jakeman on August 18, 2005, at 1:27:50

I went to one of the vigils tonight. About 1000 people showed up in downtown Austin, TX. People held candles with a paper plate around it that gave the name of a service person killed in this war. There were still names left over. It was very moving.

warm regards ~Jake

OK, this is my third attempt at trying to respond to your post! Simply to say
I wish I had been at such a vigil.
it brings up a powerful image in my mind.
I hope it's a sign of change.
I don't have much hope.

Well I get pretty discouraged at times but this ground swell of support for Cindy has given me hope. Last night I saw a cross-section of America. Senior citizens, mothers with children, couples, veterans. Even Liz Carpenter (former staffer in the Johnson administration) was there in a wheelchair. Regular people whose conscience is calling them to make a stand.

Speaking of images, there are a bunch of great photos from the vigils posted on moveon.org including one that I took.

Hi Jake

There is a picture of it in today's Sydney morning Herald, 3 people with a banner saying
'Cindy Speaks For Me
Troops Home Now'

Declan, thanks for your support!! I searched for the Herald article and couldn't find it.

I heard today that Cindy had to leave Crawford due to severe illness in her family. Other mothers who have lost sons or daughters are going to Crawford to take her place.

Hi Jake
It was a photo next to an article about something else in the US. I think the photo was taken at the ranch. But you went to a vigil in Austin, eh? Is that the capital?

Yes, Austin is the capital. It's about 100 miles south of Crawford. The currently temperature is 36 degrees C. But the northern half of the earth is slowly tilting back away from the sun and in a few months we will have your cool weather (thankfully!).

I've seen these horrible mass graves where hundreds of thousands of Iraqis were tortured and murdered on an ongoing basis. Kind of like WWII and Hitler, but on a smaller scale. I'm very proud that Cindy's son has given hope to so many who never had it. We lose some soldiers. Iraq loses some of their own. But the masses of people now have hope and a future that they never had. I'm proud the US gives a chance to those who didn't have a chance. I honor Cindy's son, all his comrades still fighting, and hope someday she will realize her son brought goodness to more people than she could count. Unfortunately, these things don't happen overnight.

I honor the soldiers too. I know some of them. I guess time will tell if the sacrifices being made by our service people are in vain. I hope not, but I'm not encouraged by the draft Constitution which favors an Islamic state.

I want to add a clarification, as I've realized that some people may be offended by my previous post.

I know that an Islamic state is preferred by many people. It's just my opinion that a clear separation of religion and government is better.

The outcome of the Iraq thing might be an islamist state, or civil war, and the polarisation of moderate Iraqi opinion.
Just reckless folly. Not so much doing it, but the way it was done. It may well be the moderate Iraqi people who pay the price.
