I noticed the BBC broadcasters had some trouble with that.
First it was: New Or-LEEENS'
Tonight some said New ORR'Leens
Maybe tomorrow they will say New Ahaw'-LeensWe need to get the Brits in here and teach them how to talk. :-). All Cajuns invited.

New awlins. The "r" is not pronounced. The accent is much like a New York accent.

My wife said she heard BBC broadcasters pronounce it "femma"(as opposed to "fee - muh")

Emphasis on Or, luns sort of following behind.
Fema is long E.
Some people still say Awlins.
No New Orleanians says New Orleeenz. But it rhymes nicely.

I was at a benefit concert tonight. All the muscians from New Orleans said "new awlins"
However you pronouce it, it's a state of mind and I hope it will remain a place as well.
