Hello all,
I'm looking to inform myself, and others in the process of course!
Could we have people talk about CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) and DBT (dialectic-behavioral therapy)? I have had CBT before, I know what it is. As for DBT, it's not so clear to me. I think it's more recent, and it seems to be used for people diagnosed with BPD (borderline personality disorder).

I think dialectical is more loosely structured and incorporates some analytical stuff... that's just my impression.
Can you outline your experience with cbt? was it helpful?

It was and still is useful. It's part of general coping skills, I find. How to deal with things that hurt oneself, etc. Ist step: realize what you're doing ot thinking that affects you negatively. 2nd step, try changing it. If you can't search for help, support, etc in the process.
I read a lot about CBT too (self help books, a lot on "adult children" problems), and so I learned quite a bit this way. I'm rather intellectual, so the reading helped me a lot. Therapy sessions helped too, but they were not just CBT; there was also some going back in time and understanding why this or that... Getting to know myself better, basically. And figuring out the things I wanted to change.

I had CBT albeit reluctantly, really I hate to be told what to do, but luckily my mother was the specialist so, I had access to all the ideas and training as needed when I felt like it..
bloody great it is !! superlogic for a brain spinning too far from reality....but....hard to get to grips with ..three years for me...
the results...I live life properly..the drugs will help ..but to get the brain to have a process in place to keep saying "well is that really going to happen ?" and so what if it does, will it be worse than having all this mental stress about it....
my top tip ...TV should be dosed to 1-2 hours a day max..
yeh I figured out..most hell is in the brain...or like in a movie..said "hell is your life gone wrong"...or living it submitted to the screen..
