terminated

Posted by alexandra_k on September 8, 2004, at 0:16:12

My T terminated me last Friday. 'Terminated' is a horrible word, but it sounds and feels apt. I thought my whole world had fallen apart. I've been in hospital since then, just got out today. That was a shock to the system. I haven't been an inpatient for about 2 years. Everybody just sits around and waits to see their doctor and they either hope and pray for discharge, or for no discharge. My p-doc has been good to me, but he wants to pass me on to someone else. He is trying to get funding so I can go to Ashburn Hall which is a private psych hospital in the South Island. It is long term though, 6 months to 1 year. He reckons I can keep studying while I am there though, and I may be able to get tutoring work at Otago University. I feel like the bottom has fallen out of my world. I don't remember having felt this hollow and alone for a long time. But I am hanging in there, one day at a time.

Alexandra_K dear,
It sounds like you have been through so much. I'm glad of your last statement, that you are taking things one day at a time. That's all any of us can do, really. It sounds like although the termination was very difficult, your doc is working still to arrange for good care. I hope everything works out for the best. In the meantime, please take as much support as you need from here and from your support IRL.

Take care,

gg

I recall that your therapist felt out of her element, and that she felt constrained to work with only "approved" CBT methods. But I wish they understood what it means to us to be terminated. If they did, they might be a bit more willing to learn and grow with us instead of referring us out. I'm glad my therapist understands that, and I'm sorry yours didn't.

What do you know about the program suggested? I know the sort of treatment best suited for you is hard to come by where you live. Does this program seem more promising?

Thanks for your support guys. I don't know whether there is anything specific for DID down in Ashburn, but I will get intensive psychotherapy in a safe environment which is what I really want the most at this stage. I don't even know whether I have DID or if I am a funny borderline case - but either way it doesn't matter to me what my diagnosis is so long as someone is willing to help me work on my symptoms. I don't really care whether they have experience in the area or not (though I guess experience would be preferable) I just want someone who is willing to work with me. My p-doc is being great about this, but he does have a limited amount of time that he can give me (about three quarters of an hour every fortnight) and he thinks DID, and perhaps even my symptoms is just too dodgey for him to want to get more involved.

I shall keep up with the boards. It is indeed nice to give as well as to receive and hopefully I can refocus my attention towards others. Thanks for the support :-) I am doing ok.

Good luck with it.

It sounds as if you have a really positive attitude, and that's great. :)

I'm extra glad you'll be able to continue to stay in touch with us, whether you're giving or receiving support.

Good luck with your new program Alexandra. I'm sorry your T terminated so abruptly, but hopefully this new program will work out for you. I agree with the others: your attitude is remarkable. Stay in touch with the board.
