DREAMING OF THERAPIST

Posted by Augustina on September 14, 2004, at 15:07:51

Hi,
This is my first time posting here but I have been reading and learning so much from all of you on these threads for the last couple months.

I was just wondering if others frequently have dreams of their therapists? I have been seeing mine for the last 18months or so and have had maybe 2 or 3 dreams with him in it. Do you bring up these dreams to your therapist? I sometimes feel hesitant to do so. I guess I just don't want him to know I think about him even in my sleep!!

Last night I dreamed I was in session w/my therapist and he had the TV on in the background. He was half listening to me and half listening to the TV! I've had issues w/my own father not really paying attention to me whenever I visit him--he'd always have the TV set on very loud so there's probably some "dream transference" going on here. Anyways, thanks for listening!

I dream about mine as well as therapy all the time. It's natureal I think. Sometimes I'll bring them up. He's never averse to hearing about them if they are about him.

I think you should bring them up. It depends on the focus of your therapist, but most think dreams that they are in are important. I have dreams about mine not paying attention or letting me fall out of windows all the time. He tells me it is because I'm still learning to trust him. I've yet to have a sexual dream, except where I propositioned him and he said no (geez, even in my dreams I can't do it!). I think that will be harder to talk about.

I have lots of dreams about my therapist and I nearly always tell her about them. I get the feeling she loves it. It is usually a good way to get talking about how I'm feeling about her and about the therapy. If I'm having doubts about it, and this comes through in the dream, its somehow easier to bring it up with the dream than directly.

I've dreamt about my T, also. Not a lot, but a couple of times that I remember vividly, and maybe a couple of more times as well.

Both dreams about her seemed significant in some way, but I only shared one of them with her.

I think your insight regarding your dream is a good one. You should think about sharing it with your T, if you haven't already.

That is so funny that you mentioned dreaming about your therapist. I have never talked about dreams before in therapy and last yesterday he brought it up, and interstingly enough he had been in it and he was mad at me about something or the other. It was funny at the time because I didn't want to mention he was in my dream and finally I did and he found the whole thing rather amusing and telling. Interesting how are subconscious works, eh?

I've dreamt many times of my therapist, and have told him as many of these dreams as I could. Even the dreams where we were intimate - the most intimate of which was one I had where we were lying in bed next to each other, clothed in nightclothes, and he put his hand on my breast. I was so unhappy, I thought to myself in the dream, ah, he's really just another man who wants me because of how I look. And I was so disappointed in him.

For me, it was extremely important to tell him my dreams because sometimes I was able to express things in dreams that I couldn't approach otherwise. Later he told me that my dreams told him things that I couldn't.

Thank-you so much for all your insightful comments and telling me about your own experiences.
I will see my T tomorrow and plan to mention the dream I had about him. I think he'd like to hear about it!
