Can anyone help me with a term for this behavior?

Posted by Colleen D. on October 6, 2004, at 20:41:01

My friend's 19yo daughter has been having a lot of problems and has just begun taking ADs. She will tell you a story about how someone threatened her life by throwing knives at her for their target practice, and then days later, deny saying anything of the sort. She actually doesn't remember that she told you this. She has been having a blackout or two a month and recently had a MRI that came back "normal." She just moved back home because she jumped out of a moving car with her dog and was injured and then her housemates kicked her out. She's an infrequent marijuana user, primarily because she's alway broke. She had no ambition and has a hard time completing simple household tasks. Is anyone familiar with this kind of behavior? I'm not looking for a diagnosis. I was just wondering if there is a psych term for the behavior.

Thanks lots!

Colleen

That sounds a bit delusional, or maybe psychotic? She may be depressed with psychotic features, maybe?

Whatever it is, that's all very serious, and that girl needs help. Did this start when she started the ADs? Or is it longer standing than that? If it's recent, and only showed up after the ADs, hie her off to a good psychopharmacologist ASAP -- that med doesn't seem like such a great choice for her. Some antidepressants can cause side effects like psychosis in some people.

I hope that helps, and give your friend my best wishes -- that's got to be brutal for her.

Thanks, Racer! She just got the ADs today...

after years of having this kind of behavior. And you told me just what I was thinking...

- delusional
- psychotic
- depressed

Thanks too for the kind words. My friend is going through a lot of stressful events with her children these days and I really feel for her.
