i probably won't get to check replies till mon or tues. so be patient with my return.
but does anyone here commute to see a T, of at least an hour drive?
how is that working for you and how long have you been seeing them?it seems there is just no one in this town that my pdoc is comfortable with (nor i) and i finally suggested i was willing to commute to a larger town about 50miles from here. he was pleased and is in the process of getting names.
i figure i'll try it out at least for a month or two, heck maybe that's all i'll need? (this is where we all fall off chairs laughing and pointing)
anyway. i'm actually scared more that it WILL work and that i WILL connect with him and WILL see him long time...all with that physical distance...course maybe that would be good too??
i talked briefly with possible T on the phone, good news is he agrees with more than once a week, offers evening sessions (good and bad) and is available most all time. sounds like what i need but...
the distance thing, and what about bad weather? and what if...and....???b2c.

Hi,
My T is located at the Uni where I am a grad student ....I live about 35 miles away (45-60 mins away by car depending on traffic, how fast/slow I drive, and whether I take the highway or the longer route). If I were just commuting to see her, then it might not be so bad. But, I also have to drive for class, to see my other treatment team members (doc and nutritionist), as well as any other reason I needed to be at school, so driving can be a pain in the rear sometimes. I'm currently moving about 15 mins away from campus (and literally 2 mins by car from where my T lives), and I think it will work out much better, BUT, to answer your question, I think that commuting to a T who you feel a connection with and that you are benefiting from can be worth it. Sometimes we had to cancel due to bad weather, but not too frequently to make it a huge issue. And "what ifs" can happen at any time, to anyone, regardless of distance. Again, if you find a T who is worth the extra time, then go for it. At least try it for a while, see how it goes.
Good luck.

I drive 45-50 min and it works well for me. I live in a small town and I don't want to run into anyone I know. I also have time in the car before I get there (good and bad) to have somewhat of an idea what to talk about in therapy. But the best is that I have that time alone after therapy to process and also settle back down if it was a difficult session. I don't mind driving and even though I live in the midwest where weather changes in five min. I have never had a problem getting to and from therapy. I have been with this T one year. However, I was with my previous T several years and he was a bit further.

Hi B2C...good to hear from you.
I don't have much of a commute at all. That makes it really easy. I think that if you don't dislike driving..actually I enjoy it for the time alone...then I think it's workable.
Even though I live about 15-20 minutes from my T, I did miss an appt. once due to getting in a car accident on the way. So I suppose weather and other what-if's can happen regardless of the distance. But the distance IS longer, so I can understand your concern.
I hope you click well with your new T, wherever they are.
Take care,
gg

Depending on traffic, I allow 45-50 minutes to my therapist's office, and he's less than 15 miles away. I'd travel a lot farther if I had to.
It's not that easy finding a good fit. I'd take it where I found it.

b2c,
I used to drive about 45 min. to 1 hr. to see my T until he recently moved to a different office. Now, it's about 1 hr. 15 min. to 1 hr. 30 min. (That's without bad traffic). Sometimes it bugs me a bit that he's so far away because it means a lot of time away from my son, but my appointments are on Saturday mornings. So, my husband gets in some good daddy time with him. And I kind of like the processing time on the ride home.
All in all, I would say not much would stop me from seeing my T.
Good luck with your decision!

you all gave great input. i thank you.
and excellent point GG.i'm loosing more and more weight, i had another 'high-episode' sat and am still very irritable today but exhausted too. people are noticing my further weight loss again. i can really tell it's hurting my hubby. he's so worried. it kills me to see that. also, haven't had s@x is FOREVER cuz he hasn't seen my bad SI scars on thighs. i'm scared. want to talk to T about it.
i can't stop it even though i try.
i'm never hungry, drugs, dep. anxiety whatever. some i know is ED. but everything else. i just can't take it anymore.
i don't want to die and sometimes i feel i'm slowing going away.thanks for the advice. i called today and set up an initial appt. for this thursday. he offer's evening and sat appt.
when we talked, i was very upfront. i want to see him more than once a week, i asked about availability inbetween sessions and his reply was "pretty much always". that's good cuz last T i saw only once a week and it skinned me alive. he was strickly 8-5 and no weekends.
this guy initialy sounds like i;ll like him.i do LOVE driving. i love the alone time and chance to think. i'm primarily worried about drive home if it's an upsetting appt. but i guess maybe we could talk it out and plan for tough sessions and have someone go with me if i can find someone.
i miss you all so much.
wish i could talk more.
-still doing ok. just need help...maybe i'll get it now. Thanks!

Just a thought: I always have calming music in my car and if has been a very difficult session I just sit in my car. If my husband is home I call him and tell him I am going to sit a process and will be home later so he doesn't worry. I would never take anyone with me as that would be admitting to someone else that I see a T. Our town is very small and I won't take that risk even though I have very confidential friends...it's just me. If you could take someone with you that would be great support. I'm glad you made the appt. and I trust you will keep us posted.
Take care of you,
Marie

Just chiming in to say I'm glad you are looking help and it does sound promising. I only have a 15 minute drive to my therapist's office but sometimes I take the long way home so I can be alone to process. Just be careful...I ran a red light once, I was so zoned out.
Let us know how it goes.

I commute 75 miles to my T. It hasn't always been that way. I used to live a couple miles away, but I moved. I could have found someone else locally, but it's worth the drive for me to see my T. She's the perfect match for me. I would drive further to see her.

It used to take me two hours to get to my T and this lasted for a year and a half until she moved closer i.e. an hour away (that's by public transport).
It was horrible when I was going there because I had so much time to think about what I would say but the way back was good.
Hope it goes well!

well.
i heard back from him yesterday and he said that between the time we talked on friday and i replied on monday he already filled the slot and is no longer taking on any new patients (for the time being).
i could hardly hold it together. i was polite and thanked him. and bawled in the ladies room for about five minutes and then took off home from work. i just thought i'd finally get help.-today's another day. i'm finally saying if i find one great if not, better for me.
what's meant to be is meant to be and maybe MY ONE just isn't taking on any new ones right now. right???
so i'm tired of looking, tired of asking. so this week, i'm going to TRY (ha) to not dwell on finding another T....Again...i'll probably still end up commuting so THANK you all for such great responses.
hangin in with a hope and a prayer.
B2c.
