Doing Therapy again - question

Posted by Broken on January 21, 2005, at 9:47:25

I've started therapy now, at the behest of my Doc.

Yesterday was my first session, and it was...well, not really sure what it was. I don't have much in the way of patience, I try something, and if it doesn't seem to work, or in this case "click" I move on, no need to waste my time. My therapist is an attractive, intelligent, very professional lady. Perhaps a bit too professional, but that is my question.

I know we're going through that "getting to know you" thing right now, and probably will be for a few weeks, but dear God this lady is cold. I mean, it wasn't like I expected a hug, and I do understand the need for an impartial, detached look at things, but sheesh. I felt like I could have talked to a mirror and done as well. While the image wouldn't have been as attractive, at least the smallest hint of empathy would've been visable.
Again, it was the first day, but am I expecting too much, or does everyone look for this type of "feeling" when seeing a therapist?

I think it's VERY important to click when you first meet. I went through two therapists with whom I did not click before I found my current one. We had an instant rapport and I think that really made me not only want to go back, but to work hard in therapy.

However, first impressions are often wrong. Maybe give her a couple more sessions?

Thankyou for the response :) totally unanswered questions so ruin my day.

I definitely think you are right, and I do plan to try at least 3 sessions. I know it takes a while for her to be able to really respond, or ask questions until she knows enough about me.
Glad to see someone else believes in having a good relationship early though. With my impatience it's hard to tell when I am being too rash in my decision making.
I still should have left my jacket on during that session though, as her initial attitude lowered the ambient temp by a good 20 degrees.

Wow, she does sound chilly! Also, therapists do have off days, hence the importance of giving a second chance.

Hi I have been to more than one T in my life and I haven't had the time today to read anybody else's reply but....I feel you should FEEL comfortable in therapy. I have with my girl T and guy T....also a PDOC I saw for a few visits...they smiled, loled looked kinda sad now and then at the right moments. I generally give a doctor or a T 2-3 visits unless cost prohibits and if I do not feel comfortable then I go looking for the right T or doc for me

BEST of luck we will wanna know what you ended up doing :)
