MPD/DID anyone?

Posted by pretty_paints on February 1, 2005, at 19:00:09

Hi guys,

I am interested in hearing from anyone who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly, Multiple Personality Disorder).

I understand that for the majority it is a result of a long-term trauma. Childhood abuse or something similar. I understand that it is to do with dissociating during painful experiences, so you can "go somewhere else in your head" and not have to deal with what is happening.

However, how does this lead to multiple personalities or "identities"? Are two of the identities usually an adult and a child? If so, how does the child identity remain as a child and not grow up?

Thanks for anyone who can help me understand more about this disorder. I understand it must be hard for some to go over details. So thanks, if you can answer in any way at all :)

Lots of love xxx

You sound very "focused" in your Post. Do you think you have this disorder? Fondly, Phillipa

PS I think we all do. We all Post here with fictious names.

For a while, i was in therapy with my pdoc about my companion Tony.

Had much difficulies with doing things, and i need someone to help me or be with me.

I started to make a figure that i could look up to, had charisma, confident, knew what he was doing.

I have known him about 2 years, i dont have DID, but have (recovering) from forms of dissociation.

Alot of times i would beg him to switch in terrifying situtions that made me almost warped, what happened was i would have a sense like an egg cracked over my head, and tingling sensation, and a very unfamiliar feeling with everything as if i didint recognize it, like a just woke up.

I had a feeling as if i was pushed "aside", but i didnt know who was taken over, but soon i came back to normal.

This is when i went to therpy with my therapist. Once and a while out of the blue a spell will hit, but i know im always going to stay the same, -idenity wise-

Tony comes in cycles, depending when i needed him, it actually gets exhausting over time to "simulate" him, and funtion at the same time, becuase its using my brain fuel, so usally he only stays around for about 2-3 days.

Hope this just gives you some insight, i read the post and thought i could give some input.

Stay Well

Matt

Prettypaints; When I was young I had a "twin brother" I kept in a bottle in the garage. I think we invent someone when we are under extraordinary stress. In my case, my mother was sick from the time I was 2yrs old and blamed it on me. She had temper tantrums raging at me that I was killing her and then would tell me how much she "loved" me. Hiya both of you,

Thanks for your replies!!

No Phillipa I don't think I have this disorder, I just find it quite interesting. I think they say for about 99% of the cases, the sufferer usually has a long, documented case of child abuse. I didn't have any real trauma in my childhood like abuse.

Anyway thanks again!

I think there are a number of us here who would say there are frozen age states that resulted from various forms of trauma. When the events are so overwhelming a child can't cope, often the child learns to dissociate and split off the trauma. If it happens at a young enough age, DID/MPD can result. But it is pretty rare. More likely you will find age states that hang around, carry their own pain and have their own needs. It can feel like you are being taken over, but tyically these age states don't take over with memory loss like MPD.

I have to add that if I didn't experience this myself, I would have said "impossible" and not really understood how absolutely split you can feel. My therapist describes it as "mind blowing" and that is exactly how I feel about all of this.
