He had another client related document on his desk today. So before I could think I asked him if I could tell him something that may sound critical, and when I got his ok, I told him he really ought to clean up his desk. He took that to be a general comment, so I narrowed it, and he said "Oh, you mean things like this?" and turned it over so that it wasn't visible. I told him I wouldn't like it if something of mine was lying open on his desk (in as calm and nonjudgmental tone I could manage - conversational even). He answered that I didn't need to worry because he didn't have anything like that for me.
Sigh. Sometimes he's so charmingly literal.

I'm glad to see that you are willing to stand up for your rights and the rights of others.
And I'm not at all surprised.
You are one strong Mama!

Well, I'd hate to have someone turn him in and cause him to have to take extra days of continuing education on HIPAA regs. ;)

Dinah,
I just wanted to tell you that I really admire your straightforward and direct nature. I'm learning and working on being more direct with people (including my T) and requesting my needs without feeling guilt. Your post really encourages me to keep working on it!

I'm not sure I deserve praise. If I'd have stopped to think, I'd have never done it.
But it is wrong of him. And in violation of professional ethics, to my understanding. I even try not to read, but I'm one of those people whose eyes are drawn to the written word automatically.
I think all professionals need to be way more aware of this. I was in a elevator with a regular doctor who was on the phone with a pain clinic about a patient, explaining that the patient was d-r-a-m-a-t-i-c, and that there was no reason for her to be complaining of pain the way she was. But that the staff had asked that she contact the pain clinic. No names were mentioned, but I wondered if the doctor realized how the conversation made her and the institution look. In fact, I think I'll contact the administration of the place tomorrow and point it out.

I'll try to get a little better at that myself...
