So what is this thing about happiness finally??

Posted by orchid on August 10, 2005, at 20:30:18

Lots of people seem to know lot about being happy, but nobody really is able to tell me what a practicaly workable way to be happy in the real world.

I have heard pretty much every theories on happiness ranging from "Follow your dreams", "Do the one thing you were born to do in this world", "Love everyone unconditionally", "Happiness is Love", "Live everyday and every moment as it is your last", "Just do it", "Surrender to God", "Dedicate all your actions to God", "Keep God in the center of yourlife", "Do social work", "Do good to others and make yourself useful", "Spirituality is the key to happiness", "Be positive", "Be Non Negative", "Zen" "Live like a kid", "Innocence is happiness" etc

But nobody is really that happy!!. Some people get lucky and manage a life without major issues and problems.

But that doesn't mean they are happy.

So what is it?

Few people are that deliriously happy all the time. I'm not sure we're meant to be. Or maybe there are a few lucky euthymic souls with just the right brain chemistry.

For most of us, I think happiness is relative. I think I'll always be relatively dysthmic. But I also think contentment and satisfaction are easier goals than happiness. Not physical contentment and satisfaction, necessarily, but emotional and spiritual contentment and satisfaction.

I won't get there until I start doing better at work, and stop spending and eating so much.
