I don't plan to post here, but I'm very curious as to exactly what "triggers" are. (I post on the med forum occasionally).
I had therapy years ago (mostly a waste of time and money), but never heard the term "triggers". I see it widely used here.
Can anyone explain it to me in 30 words or less, and /or provide me a link to an explanation?
Thanks

The term refers to any issue known generally to be a sensitive one and likely to "trigger" or elicit intense feelings from those reading the post.
Very often this term will appear in the subject line when the post discusses sensitive topics... like for instance sexual abuse, suicidal ideation, self injury..stuff like that.Really it could be anything depending on the person, for instance I am "triggered" by discussion of religion because of my history, it gets me pretty upset.
People put it in the subject line of their posts to give a warning to people for things generally known as upsetting (not my little religion thing).

A trigger precipitates something else, in general. Using the word trigger here indicates that the content might precipitate distress in someone who is sensitive to that issue.

> ggThanks for the 27 word reply. ;) For every question answered at least 2 new questions arise:
1) What does one do to become desensitized to triggers? (I know that gradual exposures are sometimes used for phobias).
2) Is the term unique to this site? or is it a widely used term in the psych. community?
3) When did the term come into use?
Thanks in advance -- a busy tomorrow.
PS -- Where do I post a fascinating tidbit about sleep? Health?

I know this is often a difficult subject for therapists because they don’t always understand what’s at stake.
