So, d'ya have to go downs roads you don't...

Posted by muffled on January 9, 2006, at 15:12:49

want to in order to become better? I feel I go in circles.
But there's places I don't go. Dunno if its can't or won't.
Maybe can't get past my own defenses. They are strong and have been around a long time.....
Sigh,
Muffled

Hi Muffy! ((((((((((((muffy))))))))
I think most people avoid those dark long roads, you are not alone. I am scared too, and I have to work every day to at least "look" down the road. But ya can't go down the road with 4 flat tires. So take your time, wait for you new tires, and someday you will be ready to drive down the long dark roads to recovery. But right now just reconizing, that you might be doing U turns, is a good sign! :) Beep Beep Beep!

Nope, I have no idea what you're talking about here...

LOL! Crack myself up.

Yep, I'm berating myself now over something similar. And I've got that voice in my head saying, "Get over it! That happened a long time agao, what is wrong with you that you're still dragging that around?" So I've got it both ways -- too afraid to start down that road, and too ashamed not to try. So, I'm stopped dead, facing the entrance to a road that scares me, with traffic honking behind me.

I cna't manage the traffic metaphore as well as HappyFlower can, so I'll stop trying.

Now that you know that your own defenses are making it harder for you to get at these issues, you've gotten past the first step. Maybe the next thing to try is to identify what it is that's stopping you? What are you afraid will happen if you start down that road?

For me, of all things, one of the worst fears is that I'll wet my pants from crying so hard and being so afraid! What we're afraid of is often kinda nuts, you know? Once you recognize the specific fear, it's a lot easier to get past it. Identify that monster, and it's often much less frightening. It's a great feeling to laugh at an ogre, you know.

Good luck.

you guys!!!!!!!!!!!THANKS! (nm)

Hm, good question.
My current T says that she realizes there are places I won't go. She says I can control whether or not we go there at any time, by telling her I dont' want to discuss xxx thing right then. She said she'll respect that for that time, but that won't mean she'll never go there again. ;-) She also says I can do it all at my pace, which I guess is obvious to someone else, but to me hearing it was helpful as my former T was always bouncing back and forth on things and rushing the therapy since we had limited time left which wasn't very conducive to my wanting to disclose much to her.

As for defenses, geez I know what you mean. I'm not sure....You're question needs some time to sit in my head a bit, but I do understand what you mean and you're not alone in how you feel.

Sorry if this wasn't much help.

Take care,
sv
