The secret is: have Thanksgiving with someone else's well adjusted family.
Thanksgiving with my family is a dangerous proposition, as I'm sure most of you can relate to. We alternate between going because we feel obligated and having the good sense to protect ourselves by staying home.
This year we were invited to join our neighbors' parents' big family Thanksgiving event. Our neighbors have a little boy the same age as our daughter and we practically live in each others' houses. So, they were kind of like family. The dad's parents and all of his siblings live in town. It was a wonderful day! Football in the backyard, full traditional dinner, stories and jokes and we even got to take home some leftovers.
I think I'll adopt his family for all of my upcoming family holidays.

Hi Peg,
I tried to worm my way into a friend's family for Thanksgiving, but with no luck. I have always been willing to be adopted by new parents, hopefully rich ones, but supportive emotionally is okay, too.

Since a lot of us have less than awesome families, maybe we all could get together and have some fun. ;-)

It sounds like you had a lovely holiday. It's too bad you can't rent a nice family like that for special occasions. :)
